Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Post your rating system here« on: November 22, 2017, 09:05:25 AM »
CJ, I saw the discussions about Meek's Cutoff, The Homesman and the new Magnificent Seven which just reinforces my believe that a ratings system is completely arbitrary. I really like Jill's interpretation of it though.

Walk East on Beacon (1952). Incredibly plodding anti-Commie movie, not even campy fun. It's on youtube. Give it a miss.

I don't think it's really clear it was Carmen, but as we all agree, who cares?

Agree with D & D. The plot of The Big Sleep does not matter. It's bad, it's incomprehensible, it's a mess. Doesn't matter. It's Bogart and Bacall and a lot of style.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: The Maltese Falcon (1941)« on: November 19, 2017, 04:01:35 PM »Quote Which one do you think is the better film? The 1941 version is rightfully considered a classic. Obviously the cinematography is much better, just 10 years improved this art greatly. It's hard to beat Bogart obviously, but Bebe Daniels is much better and sexier than Astor. All in all the '41 version wins, but the '31 version puts up a good fight. 40

Considering The Big Combo was made on a shoestring budget, the cinematography is beautiful.
Quote Do you think its worth me taking a flyer on it?You're in luck, it's on youtube! Edit: If you see one of my reviews, they all contain spoilers. Maybe I should write disclaimers on them. 41
Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Scarlet Street (1945)« on: November 19, 2017, 11:16:33 AM »Quote OUT OF THE PAST is the quintessential noir for me. It has every elememt of noir, in addition to the cinematography: flashback, narration, femme fatale, private eye, bleak ending .... Yes, Out of the Past is obviously on the list off all-time great Noirs. What to me makes Scarlet Street so exceptionally bleak is the main character, who I would say never had a chance from the day he was born. Chris Cross is the ultimate sucker who always must have been the punching bag for everybody. 42

Thanks, moorman. BTW, the 1931 version is definitively worth seeking out. It is just set in a completely different universe, but it stands very well on its own. I'll have to dig up my old review.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: The Public Enemy (1931)« on: November 19, 2017, 11:09:16 AM »Quote The early sound era was not very good. From a technical point of view that's certainly true. Cinematography was fairly uninspired. However, the dialogue in Pre-Codes usually makes up for it. I agree The Public Enemy has many problems. The only performance that's good here is Cagney's. Jean Harlow's acting is atrocious, and all the other actors were clearly still in silent mode. Definitively the worst was Cagney's brother. However, the ending still packs a punch. Moorman, here's another boxset for you to buy. It's worth it. https://www.amazon.com/Gangsters-Collection-Petrified-Roaring-Twenties/dp/B00114XLTQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1511114848&sr=8 3&keywords=warner+brothers+gangster+collection 44

Another different kind of van Cleef role is his gay henchman Fante in The Big Combo. Good Noir too.

Off-Topic Discussion / Re: Rate The Last Movie You Saw« on: November 18, 2017, 04:51:15 PM »Quote the life expectancy for the average fighter pilot was 2 weeks. That sounds about right. Volunteering for that meant signing your own death warrant. If the pilots weren't shot down, there was a big chance the planes would simply crash because the technology was not particularly good during WW1. |
