CJ, I saw the discussions about Meek's Cutoff, The Homesman and the new Magnificent Seven which just reinforces my believe that a ratings system is completely arbitrary. I really like Jill's interpretation of it though.

Walk East on Beacon (1952). Incredibly plodding anti-Commie movie, not even campy fun. It's on youtube. Give it a miss.

The plot from The Big Sleep makes sense, and is not that difficult to follow Stanton, wow, you're good.  I guess you'd really have to concentrate on the plot to follow it, and it's so much more fun just to watch Bogart and Bacall. I still don't know who killed Sean Regan. And of course as in all good films storytelling and style are more important than plot or content. I've been preaching that from the pulpit for years.

Agree with D & D. The plot of The Big Sleep does not matter. It's bad, it's incomprehensible, it's a mess. Doesn't matter. It's Bogart and Bacall and a lot of style. One of the few times the movie is better than the book.

Which one do you think is the better film? The 1941 version is rightfully considered a classic. Obviously the cinematography is much better, just 10 years improved this art greatly. It's hard to beat Bogart obviously, but Bebe Daniels is much better and sexier than Astor. All in all the '41 version wins, but the '31 version puts up a good fight.

Considering The Big Combo was made on a shoestring budget, the cinematography is beautiful. Do you think its worth me taking a flyer on it? You're in luck, it's on youtube! Edit: If you see one of my reviews, they all contain spoilers. Maybe I should write disclaimers on them.

OUT OF THE PAST is the quintessential noir for me. It has every elememt of noir, in addition to the cinematography: flashback, narration, femme fatale, private eye, bleak ending .... Yes, Out of the Past is obviously on the list off all-time great Noirs. What to me makes Scarlet Street so exceptionally bleak is the main character, who I would say never had a chance from the day he was born. Chris Cross is the ultimate sucker who always must have been the punching bag for everybody.

Thanks, moorman. BTW, the 1931 version is definitively worth seeking out. It is just set in a completely different universe, but it stands very well on its own. I'll have to dig up my old review.

Another different kind of van Cleef role is his gay henchman Fante in The Big Combo. Good Noir too.

the life expectancy for the average fighter pilot was 2 weeks. That sounds about right. Volunteering for that meant signing your own death warrant. If the pilots weren't shot down, there was a big chance the planes would simply crash because the technology was not particularly good during WW1.
