A few years ago I saw a film called GLADIATOR, and now I think this film has a real Leone spirit. A mythical hero in a mythical world. This sense of the historic show and greatness. The omni presence of a strong style and many stylized effects. The close shots and a beautifful music.
It's the first time I really think about it, but yeah, this film may be the more Leonesque film of the few past years. Maybe it's why I liked it so much and it's one of my favourite films.  I liked Private Ryan too.

Takeshi Kitano is one of my new favorite directors, but I have to disagree with everybody that Hana-Bi is his masterpiece. I think Sonatine is his best film personally, but my favorite of his is (if not Sonatine), Brother or Kids Return.

My nationality is Dutch, but there are no Dutch movies on my list...  :)

to Il Tramonto:
I do believe Hana-Bi is Kitano's masterpiece. It's far more esthetic than Sonatine, and has a better story in my humble opinion. Sonatine is funnier though...

Artistically I could see why people call Hana-Bi Kitano's best, but to me the whole film was like watching a painting in motion. That's not a bad thing, but I just felt like I couldn't really connect with the characters and that everything was being done more for "art" instead of some deep message. I do think Sonatine should have had the guys playing around on the island for maybe 10 more minutes or so, but this is probably the Kitano movie that's had a heaviest impact on me so far. Still haven't seen Dolls, Boiling Point, or Violent Cop though.

Probably is, but I'm not in for the popularity. And why is it crap?
And what did you think of the rest of the list?
Maybe you could give us a preview of your list?

Well, it's better than if they think that Amsterdam is a country... or that we all wear wooden shoes around here...

i dunno aaronson... i just can't see how anyone could have the godfather number 1... not to mention the godfather part 2 number 2... yet alot of people do... i just don't see it, and maybe it's because i'm not a fan of the genre.

as for the rest of the list... well done... i haven't seen a lot of them... but the ones i have seen are well placed... nice to see dr strangelove and the blues brothers getting some love.

 8) hola hippieoddball. hope you are feeling a bit better friend. well, when I'm a bit down in the dumps, I watch the sort of movies that are just 'big, dumb action movies'.  take your name for example; taken from KELLY'S HEROES! great fun.  there are lots of titles that have been mentioned that I agree with. LOVE THE ROAD WARRIOR! it's the sort of movie that has a certain magic that can never be replicated like STAR WARS, PREDATOR and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK... y'know, those one-off originals.
