Favourite non-Leone Morricone Score

As he said it himself, Ennio always preferred a good score, a very beautiful, melodic and "musical" score, than a "movie" one.

In his opinion, his music must sound good, and not to fit with the images. His music must sound good for itself. If it fits with the images, it's better, but it is not the first task of HIS music.

That's why you have some fabulous Morricone "movie" scores, who fits fantastically with the images, like "The Mission", "OUTA" or "OUTW", and others who are not so fantastic, as "movie" scores, but who are great as music.

I think about "Il Gatto" for example, anyone knows it?

I think also about many other scores from the seventies, with bozza nova and jazz influence, who are really jewells.

Also many other score from the eighties, more classical ones.

I agree with you, Colonna, a distinction must be made between all the scores.

But even in the hundred of "tunes" as you call them you can find some authentical jewel, music masterpieces.

I agree with you Shorty Larsen, I only regret that Ennio has accepted to work for few low Directors. As we say in my country:" it's giving jam to pigs"

I mean that  we must  now make a distinction between masterpieces seriously built with the Director (Sergio, Bernardo ....)  and tune (even great tune) componed far from the film .

No doubt Morricone worked for low rated directors. Can we blame him for that?

I have more than 80 cd of Morricone, that is to say near 80 movies which music was composed by Morricone, and honestly, I only watched 20 or 30 of those movies.

My point is that for the rest of the movies scores, movies that I didn't watch (50 or 60), the music is excellent, even without having seeing the images.

Except for Leone's movies, or Tornatore's movies, I never buy a Morricone CD for the movie. No. I buy a Morricone CD because of Morricone, because he is a fantastic music composer.

He has a sensibility out of common and I wonder what would he became in the XVIII century for example, as a classical musci composer. Would he be a Mozart for example?

Let's not exagerate..... But anyway, Morricone is fantastic.

Shorty I can't agree you more. I sometimes try to avoid to watch flops that Morricone takes part in because the movies could kill the image of his sounds.

I like Ennio very much too. But Sergio showed us that Music is an element of the movie and Music compositor a real partner.
When Ennio accepted to show his name on screen he did also accept to be one of the movie fathers. It is a big responsibility ...the same for an actor or a producer.

Let's be simple; Ennio wanted also make many money.

And I agree with you, let's not be naifs, Ennio wanted to make money.

I also agree when you say that a movie must be a unit, a homogen project. Everything has to be in harmony, specially the music.

Sometimes, Ennio was aware of this and tried to make an effort, like "Mission" for example, in wich he makes an effort to combine classical music with aborigen music and barroc chamber music, because of the script of "Mission".

From my own part, If I was a director, I would like a composer to make a score in perfect harmony with my images and with the way I like to tell my story. I think about "Dances with Wolves" by John Barry. I think that no other score in cinema history fits better with the images than this score. But I heard the music 2 years before watching the movie, and I was shocked by the music, without having watch the movie.

To me Ennio is much more than a movie composer. He is a friend thanks to whom my mind is transported in space thanks to his music.
 
Nevertheless, it's true that his scores doesn'y always fit with the images, but I don't give a sh....!!!!!!!!!!

Those CD's are japanese (only the japanese are mad enough to produce this kind of cd!!!!) and very hard to find.

Just got a copy of the 'Il Serpente' soundtrack LP

After work.. a local record shop. Another one of these Dagored Label, Morricone reissues. I think im addicted to them, ive got quite a few now.
Better than paying a small fortune on ebay.

Score is very much like 'Una Lucertola Con La Pelle Di Donna' in style. very good.

I recommended this cd on another board some time ago, but have some of you heard his latest album, Focus. He did it together with Dulce Pontes. Lyrics have been written to several of his film scores, with Ennio counducting and Dulce singing. She has a great voice, and the album is a beautiful one indeed.

I love "Death rides a horse" and "U-Turn". "The big gundown" and "Navajo Joe" are amazing too. There are so many!
