The list of Oscar nominees was released today:

http://www.moviefone.com/oscars-academy-awards/nominee-winner?icid=maing%7Cmain5%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk3%7C38927

I've seen six of the ten Best Picture nominees, which is better than last year. And none of the remaining four seem especially tantalizing.

Nice to see True Grit getting nine nominations, but does it have a chance of winning any?

As long as Inception is shut out of anything beyond effects I'll be happy.

Pretty good year. The only major Oscar True Grit can hope is best actor, I guess. The other ones will probably be shared between Inception, The Social Network and The King's Speech (that I've not seen).
After that, True Grit will probably get at least one of the minor ones (sound, costumes, set).

I think True Grit has a decent chance for Best Supporting Actress and maybe Cinematography (Deakens has been snubbed many times over). I'd be shocked if it won anything else.

I won't especially mind if The Social Network or The King's Speech wins Best Picture.

Due to the numerous nominations of  The King's Speech, Harvey Weinstein is thinking of editing the adult language out of it. He thinks it could help the box office, considering the success the film got in UK where audience was allowed from 12.

Weinstein should go lay down in front of a steamroller.

That had to be one of the greatest retorts I've ever heard in my life.

And as for The Social Network, although I enjoyed the film a great deal (except for the overly cheesy final sequence), I do not feel it is best picture material. I still have yet to see The King's Speech, 127 hours, Black Swan, The Fighter, The Kids are Alright or Winter's Bone (although I have a feeling most people haven't caught the last one), but I have to say, I haven't seen a nomination list this good since 2008. I really want to see all of the films listed whereas say last year I could care less to see Avatar.

The Social Network is a zeitgeist film. Whether or not it's truly great (I'd argue that point myself), it definitely captures the mood of its time and stands a good chance of winning for that reason alone.

I'll agree with you though that this is a solid list of nominees - much better than last year's line-up of mediocrities. Of the six I've seen, only Black Swan and Inception would get strong objections from me. This is doubly impressive considering they needed to find ten films.

It would be pretty funny if Bridges wins the Oscar for the same role another actor had already won it for.

A first in Oscar history?

Brando and De Niro both won for playing Vito Corleone, albeit different awards.
