The sun was starting to set and the man in the black derby picked up the pace by encouraging the Palamino from a trot to a canter.  They came across an almost dried up creek and the horse sniffed and hoved at the water before drinking.  Jumping off the  the horse the man filled his canteen with the cool liquid.  He took a long draw off the canteen and could hear some noise in the far off distance.  Squinting  his eyes and looking out on the horizon he sees smoke raising in the distance off to the west were the sun was setting.  Mounting his horse and heading towards the general direction of the setting sun he soon finds himself coming across several buildings and stables and works his way into the center of a small town in the middle of nowhere.  He had found what he was looking for in the heart of the town.  The Ace High Saloon.  Sounds of a tinny piaino and laughter filled the evening air.  He tied up the Palamino to the hitching post and stepped up on the boardwalk.  He took a long  look around up and down the street before he swung the hinged doors open and made his entrance.

From up in the mountains we hear someone scream " THIS IS FOR MY BROTHER!!! " The man fires the winchester repeatedly but misses. The man in the black derby gallops away to the side out of the way of the falling rocks. He takes cover behind a solid boulder just in case some falling rocks come his way. He pulls out his Colt Bluntline Special and connects the shoulder stalk ( or however you spell it ) to the but of the pistol. He takes aim as the man with the winchester up in the hills fires down at the man. One shot from the Bluntline rings out and the rifleman is dead. The rock slide has by now ended and the man gets up onto his horse and rides down to the praries.
another man has witnessed all this but must remain silent . he is on his way back to the mexican border w/ "offical business" for a certain general fighting for the revolution. alone w/ the dead man he realizes the
man is not completely dead and is muttering something over and over.  convinced he's safe now he crawls over to see if he can understand what the dying man is saying knowing the man will be stone cold dead in a breif time judging by his wounds.  knowing he's on a desperate mission to get back w/ the news for the general he can't help but risk stopping and listening to the last words.....

" That rat killed my brother Juan " whispers the dying man. The witness, Private Sanchez, looks astonished. " Juan Alfredo? " asks the Private. " Yeh " replies the dying man. " Juan Alfredo was ordered to smuggle Winchesters from the United States for our glorious hero of the revolution, General Garcia " said the private. " He never got to Mexico alive. He was killed by a group of bandits. Thier leader was dressed in a black coat and had a black derby hat. That man is on his way to Tucumcari by now. " The man finally dies. The private realizes that the man dressed in black might know where the shipment of rifles are. He leaves the dead man to rot in the desert as he gallops away toward Tucumcari.

In town, the stranger entered the saloon to get a drink after all that excitement up in the hills. He asks the timid bartender for a whiskey. The man is about to drink his hard-earned drink when three pistoleros line up at the bar....

The stranger sees them in the reflection of the bar window. All three are armed to the teeth, their pistols gleeming under the dirt covered clothes. The first one has a wanted poster in his hand, he lifts it up to match the picture of the poster with the reflection of the stranger. They match. He nods to the other two who begin to walk towards him. The first man gets in within two steps of the stranger before twin flashes of iron appear from the strangers coat and the three fall to the ground in their death throws.
The stranger looks at the three dead pistoleros with a blank, cold face. He finishes his drink, flips a coin out onto the bar top and walks out, leaving the saloon stunned in silence...

He rides through the center of town once again and comes across the sheriffs office.  He glances over towards the office which looks deserted and thinks to himself “coward”.  By this time the sun has set and darkness starts to take hold over the town of Tucumcari.  He rides to the outskirts to the train depot.  A loud whistle announces the arrival of an incoming train.  He stays on his horse as the passengers disembark.  The porters scurry along side of the train helping the women with their baggage and unload the cargo from the freight cars.  The man in the black derby focuses on the cargo being unloaded.  He sees what he has come for.  12 crates, 10 of which contain 20 1876 Winchesters each, and the last two containing 8000 .44 center fire cartridges.  The porters unload the first 10 with no problem but when they get to the ammunition they struggle to budge the boxes.  One porter turns to another and says “what the hell’s in these crates?  Lead?”
“Gold!” replies the man in the derby.  The porter turns to see the man in black with a smirk on his face not knowing if he’s joking or being serious.  Just then two men approach the man on the horse and one of them taps him on the leg.  The man on the horse swings around with his ’73 .45 Colt Peacemaker cocked and drawn and draws a bead on the three men.

“Jesus!  You almost got yourself dead Fred!”

“What’s got you so jumpy Rex?”  Fred asked looking up at the man in the derby.

“A couple of my drinking buddies in town got the bright idea they’d turn me in for the bounty on my head, that’s all.  How was the trip Jimmy?” Rex asked the silent one.

“Long and boring… There ain’t nothing to do on a damn train for 8 hours…”

“So I take it you haven’t had time to arrange for a wagon yet…” Fred asked Rex.

“Nope.  We'll just have them stowed it away in the depot over night until we can get a hold of one in the morning.” Rex said

"You think that's safe?" asked Jimmy

"No one knows about the rifles but us." Replied Rex

The porters loaded the crates onto a cart and proceeded to wheel them in to the depot where Rex started to instruct the station master that they would need to store the crates overnight.

Just below the water tower private Sanchez was smoking a long thin cheroot observing quietly what was transpiring.

Fred and Jimmy gathered their horses from the livestock car and fastened their saddles on the backs of the horses.

Rex and the two men mounted up and made thier way out and into the desert landscape to set up camp for the night.

unknown to fred and jim, sanchez follows them out of town. if for any reason he has a big stake in the revolution and this might be an oportunity to "extract" information needed from the two men once out on the prairie. sanchez owes the general a "favor" and intends to pay back that bill with interest, that is, until he enters a old delerect graveyard w/ no tombstones. he sees his own name on an open grave which is strange as no other grave has any markers. suddenly from ahead a lone figure of an old man appraoches unarmed. the old man has news of what just became of sanchez' family when he was a child. the kind of information people pay dearly to learn more about. the wind blows. a northern is moving in and both men seek shelter together for protection, coffey and an exchange of information.

Private Sanchez and the old man, the old prophet most accurately, arrive at the prophet's shack. " Sanchez is the name correct? " asks the prophet. " Yes. What do you know about my family? " " Too much. Your father, mother and sister were killed by bandits - " " ...one wearing a derby dressed in black? " " Yeh! I saw the whole thing as I was on my way to town. The one in the derby asked your father where some rifles were. " " I was originally suppose to deliver them to General Garcia but Juan Alfredo decided to deliver them at the last minute. Had I have made the delivery I would've faced the same fate as them. " " Do you want any coffee youngster? " " No thanks. I got a job to do. I gotta- " His sentence was interrupted by the sound of horse hoofs pounding in the distance. The horses all stop and loud knocks are heard on the door....

“Old gravedigger, are you in there?” an excited voice calls out.  Loud banging on the door persists and the old prophet stirs his coffee calmly before getting up to answer it.  He turns to Sanchez and says, “I saw these men coming. They are in search of the man in the back derby same as you, but for different reasons.

Gravedigger!  This is the sheriff of Tucumcari!  Open up!

The old man hands Sanchez his coffee before answering the door…”Yes, yes, what is it?” he replies thinking to himself he already knows the answer.

He opens the door to reveal the sheriff and his posse.
“Old man, we have come from Tucumcari in pursuit of  a man wanted for three murders that took place earlier today.  We have been tracking him but the trails grown cold.  Have you seen anyone come through these parts in the last hour?”

“I know why you have come and whom you seek. Only Senor Sanchez has graced his presence in these parts to arrange funeral”.  The old man turns to reveal Sanchez to the sheriff.  Stepping though the door the sheriff looks down on Sanchez sizing him up.  “This man is responsible for a cold blooded murder up on the foothill range and another two at the Ace High.  I aim to find him.  Seen anyone like that riding on a golden Palamino with two other fellows Senor Sanchez.” the sheriff asks looking first at Sanchez then combing the room of the dirt hut for any signs of anything out of the ordinary.

Lying through his teeth Sanchez replies “No sheriff, I haven’t seen anyone like that”  reluctantly taking a sip of the unwanted coffee to fill his mouth with something other than words.

The sheriff took one last look around before turning to leave.  “Just be on the look out!  These men are extremely dangerous and are up to no good.  We plan to have a lynching by sundown tomorrow!”

The prophet looked the sheriff in the eyes with concern and asked him “How's the leg sheriff?” The sheriff let out a jolly chuckle. “The legs fine you crazy old coot.” And with that the sheriff and his posse were gone.

Sanchez finished his coffee and squinted his eyes in reflection as to what he had just heard.  His train of thought was interrupted by the old prophet.  “Come my boy, I want to show you something.” beckoning Sanchez towards the door.

They walked amongst the barren graveyard once more and the old man turned towards Sanchez.  “You must succeed in your endeavors for the right reasons.  Greed, gluttony, fame, riches these are not worthy traits to pursue.  You must do the right things and know when to do them.  Respect, honor, trust, glory.  These are the traits you will acquire whether you want to or not but you must make your decisions wisely or you will suffer the consequences”

The old prophet helped Sanchez to his horse and as he mounted he noticed four more freshly dug graves.

Juan Alfredo and the others from the saloon?” asked Sanchez   “But how could you have known?”

“I see things my boy, I see things…You must make the most wisest of choices or you will meet the same fate as these.” The prophet warned waving his hand in front of the graves and lastly pointing to the grave halfway dug for Sanchez.

"But my family..."  Sanchez said angraily

"Yes, I know it's tough boy, but before setting out on revenge you must learn to first dig two graves..."

Sanchez took one last look at the halfway dug grave but to his astonishment his name had been replaced by an image.  The image of a derby hat.

The derby, Fred, Rex, and Jimmy returned to the train station the following day to pick up the rifles being stored at the station. When they got there they saw eight Mexican soldiers observing the crates where the rifles were hidden. " Damn it! Hide fellas! " whispered the derby. They hid behind a corner watching and listening to the soldiers. " We've finally found Garcia's rifles! Jose! " said the leader. " Yes sir? " responded Jose. " Ask the station manager who paid to store this crate here. That person is the bandito who stole our rifles. " The derby and his men stepped out from behind the wall, pistols aiming at the soldiers. " How can dead men ask the station manager who stored the rifles? " The four men started firing away at the eight soldiers gunning down each one of them. " Get that crate onto the wagon at once! Quickly before the whole town comes flocking over to see who's shooting! " screaming the Derby. The four men lifted the crate onto the wagon and took off down the trail that followed the railroad tracks. Just as they left the sheriff and his deputies arrived at the station. " Damn! They got away! " said the sheriff. " No. Look down there! They're taking the trail that follows the railroad. If we borrow a locomotive, we can catch up to them. " said one of the deputies. They all rushed over to a locomotive that was idling on the side track. The engineer and fireman were oiling up the wheels when they saw the sheriff and his deputies come rushing up. " Get up in that cab and highball the engine. We need to borrow your train. " said the sheriff. The sheriff got up into the cab with the engineer and fireman while the deputies got onto the front and side of the locomotive. The train rolled out of the yards and the chase began...

The locomotive barreled down the rails and the sheriff had taken over in the engine room barking orders to the engineer and the coal lugger.  The rest of the posse had gathered their horses in the livestock car and searched for good vantage point to shoot from along the wall of wooden boards.

“What them men do sheriff besides gunning down them Mexes?”  Asked the engineer.

“They’re wanted for multiple murders, including those back at the station.  Shot a man up in the foothills.  Two at the Ace High yesterday.  God knows how many in between.  I aim to catch ‘em so hop to it…  Stoke that fire idiot!”

“You mean this ain’t got nothing to do with them rifles they be packing on the back of that wagon.?”.

The sheriff froze.  “What did you say?”

“Them rifles, the station master was just getting ready to send for you before you rode up.  He got suspicious this morning when the man in the black derby came to pick ‘em up.  He just felt something wasn’t’ right.  Says he’s got crates full of rifles and from the looks of it was in a fast hurry to get headed south, right towards the boarder, right before them Mexican soldiers showed up.

“South, right to the boarder…”  The sheriff mumbled under his breath.

Ahead, The Black Derby was riding solo on the wagon they had stolen earlier from a pig farm on the outskirts of town.  He had been pushing the horses hard along the bumpy trail next to the railroad tracks.  The rest of his gang was galloping along side of him watching the precious cargo bounce around in the back of the wagon.  The sound of the train whistle cracked through their ears like shot through a gun and they all turned to see the shinny locomotive come barreling down on them…

The sheriff's men clinging to the side of the locomotive began to fire at the four men. They were too far ahead to be hit by the bullets though. Rex, who was on the wagon with the box of rifles and other artillery, pulled out a stick of dynamite. He lit the fuse and hurled it at the locomotive which was now even closer. It exploded on the tracks destroying the rails. The locomotive derailed and stopped buried in a bank of sand. Only a few deputies were killed but their problems soon got worse when they realized that the train derailed between two hillsides and hidden up there were the four men ready to pick them off one by one...
