In June's 2004  issue of the italian movie magazine "Ciak", there is an interview with Andrea Leone (Sergio's son), where he announces that he is trying to get a movie shot which his father planned to shoot before the Leningrad project. It was written by Sergio together with L. Morsella and F. Toncella.
The story (25 pages) is in the magazine and it's truly great stuff. It is called "A place only Mary knew" and it's about two rogues who became friends during the civil war in 1863-1864. Leone had R. Gere and Mickey Rourke in mind; Rourke apparently was enthusiastic about it and he spent several days at Leone's home in 1988 discussing the movie. Andrea said he now would like Brad Pitt and George Clooney for the parts, as Rourke and Gere are now too old; when asked who he would like to direct it, he said Q. Tarantino, which makes sense. Leone wanted to dedicate the movie to Edgar Lee Masters, Mark Twain, Ambrose Pierce and Margaret Mitchell ("Gone with the wind"). Let's hope that Andrea manages to get the movie made, as the story is really great, although only Leone could have directed it the way we all like...!

That would be pretty cool. I actually managed to read the treatment for this and it was a lot of fun (a friend of mine got it somehow from a contact in the film industry in Europe). I think QT would be the ideal director. Just a shame we can't have Leone...

Tarantino is an excellent idea, but he usually prefer to realize the scripts he writes himself.... and I understand it, look at the result of his movies!

A Leone script directed by Tarantino, with Sergio's son taking charge of the project... can't really go wrong.

Certainly.

But what I meant was that I believe that Tarantino likes to have a full control of the project.

Well, full control is exactly what he didn't have over Kill Bill - that's why it's 2 movies instead of one long movie. Which, in my opinion, would have been far better. But he has mentioned that at least in Europe later on we'll have the opportunity to see his "director's cut" of one long movie in the cinemas.

well; it will be marvelous, as if I don't like Tarantino's movies but, we can not have all we want in the life...
And I think Clint Eastwood could be a better director...But it's just my opinion...

Cool something called '900 Days'? a book.... Russian Revolution... Robert DeNiro.... no script, only budget...? I must dig up my old VHS copy of the VIVA LEONE documentary and / or the brilliant Frayling book SOMETHING ABOUT DEATH to refresh my memory.

Does anyone here have that treatment of "A Place Only Mary Knows" from Ciak Magazine? Can you translate it into English?  Smiley

I had the italian Ciak magazine which came out in 2004 with the treatment and I've been looking for it now for an hour but couldn't find it anymore. I hope my wife didn't just throw into the trash can thinking it was just an old italian magazine: I'll keep looking for it and if I'll find it I'll let you know,OK?
