"One banana, two banana, three banana, four...."

In May of '78 I walked into the Our Price Records in Charing Cross Road just as a sales clerk was cueing up "Black and White" by the Stranglers. What I heard that day blew me away and profoundly altered my musical tastes for years to come. Later I learned that the producer responsible for the sound on that album, as well as the two previous Stranglers albums, was a bloke named Martin Rushent. After that, the presence of that name on a release always signalled a guarantee of quality.

The high water mark of Rushent's career is probably The Human League's "Dare", but I will always associate him with the Stranglers and the Buzzcocks and the heady days of the late 70s. It's a shame he's died so young. RIP, Martin.

Great to hear from someone who knew the man.

The Stranglers were never the same after they parted company from Rushent.

I will agree with you on that score, Rushent seemed to have a talent in moulding bands on the way up
see his human League work and the Buzzcocks.
I think this man knew his limitations, once bands found their feet in the Studio he quickly moved on
he knew what the bands should sound like and produced that product, when the acts wanted their own control
the collaborations had to end
They do say here and there that Rushent was strangler number five
