I don't tend to post in the off-topic section so much, but felt this really needed a thread of its own.

Simply put, this is quite possibly the best documentary film I have ever watched. If you get the chance, go see it (my wife hadn't even heard of him and still loved it):

Senna (2010) - 9/10. A documentary on the career of Ayrton Senna, a kind of god of Formula 1, apparently. The great thing is, you don't have to be a fan of racing (and I'm not) to enjoy this. The film is assembled like a feature, with the hero overcoming several setbacks and an evil rival to notch up three world championships. It's like Grand Prix without the soap opera bits, and with real people instead of actors. The only thing I can fault the film for is the overuse of foreshadowing--the ending is telegraphed. For people who already know the story that may be no big deal, but for those of us who went in without knowing anything in advance, it would have been better if the climax came as more of a shock. Still, this is a great bit of editing, and a terrifically entertaining flick.

Sounds like Asif Kapadia is back with another documentary. This time it will be about Amy Winehouse:

Looks like they will be taking a similar approach to Senna by eschewing all the talking heads again and making it into another real life feature (at least I hope so):

May it be so.

If it weren't for the fact that "Senna" was snubbed in 2012, I would be overjoyed that "Amy" won an Oscar this year. Yet, as good and deserving as "Amy" is, "Senna" is quite simply a better film. At least Kapadia finally got the recognition he deserved.

I guess as with all things Oscar related, quality is only relevant up to a point. In this case it probably has less to do with "buying" your Oscar nomination through strategic marketing than with Amy Winehouse simply being a bigger global icon than Ayrton Senna and Formula 1 not being very popular in the US.

I think you've sussed it.
