Analyze This (1999) It is very funny for 3/4. Then it falls into not very funny farce also considering that Crystal is a mediocre actor, let alone comedian. A pity. 7-8/10

A Damsell in Distress (1937) A story better than usual (courtesy of Wodehouse) but the comedians (Burns $ Allen) do not vivify it like those in the better Rogers-Astaire did. Actually Allen playing the airhead is annoying, But, and that's a surprise, the couple are good as Astaire's dancing partners and the numbers they are featured in are remarkable, especially the one in the Luna Park. Fontaine can't dance for life and at IMDB is criticized for the acting: I'm not so sure about it but who cares? She's pretty and that's what is important. 7/10

Battle of Britain (1969) The special effects here are very good when they show the bombings on the ground. The problem I had with the aerial fights is that I almost never guessed which ones were the Stukas and which the Spitfires. But they were good. The actors, well. Olivier as Dowding goes through the motions, as often with him. I've never saw Caine playing so badly. The rest is oK. 7/10

Scaramouche (1952) One of the best adventure movies ever. It is a pleasure for the eye because the photography, the sets, the costumes are so vivid. The pace is perfect  and the little recreations of the italian commedia dell'arte sketches so cute. For once both  leading ladies are eyecandy while Granger and Ferrer are perfect. There is no Hollywooden molasses in spite of the cartoon like consistency of story and characters. 10/10

Johnny English (2003) Mr Bean Talks! And is not remotely funny. Atkinson was tolerable when he was playing his famous character, but that was mostly due to his gagmen: he's not a born comedian and here he shows it. All the more so as the script is weak, the production cheap and the jokes stale. The only scene worth remembering is the chase: and that is not because of Atkinson's contribution. 4/10

Mr. Holmes (2015) More of a reflection on the character at 93 than the story of a case (though there is a kind of one). McKellen's performance secures interest in the proceedings. No Watson (only verbally evoked) 7-8/10

Let's Dance (1950) The dancing numbers are good (actually the solo of Astaire with the pianos is VERY good) but it is evident the absence of good supporting comedians. 7/10

He great in Blackadder

Indeed he is. It preceded Mr. Bean and is way funnier.

Mr. Bean was just an easy export all over the world because the gags were entirely visual.

His Girl Friday (1940) What doesn't persuade me in this version is Russell: I don't think she's a great comedian. So it's 9/10.

Ball of Fire (1941) Why is this one considered a classic eludes me. Based on the same premise of Shaw's Pygmalion (already an annoying work) namely the meeting of academic culture (how the plebs imagine it to be, of course) with the apparently mysterious lingo of the multitude, this one is hard to get through because of the spectacle of adults behaving like morons. Sure, Cooper is as usual perfect, but his character was maybe tolerable 80 years ago, but now it is just idiotic. I would give this a 3/10 but for Stanwyck (I'm partial to her, I said it here repeatedly: here she's even sexier than ususal), Duryea and the Krupa band who collectively raise it to 4-5/10.

Il vento mi ha cantato una canzone (1947) The only reason for releasing this mediocre comedy (with the title based on a mediocre song performed repeatedly in the movie) is the presence of Sordi. Though billed after 3 actors he is easily the most solid presence in the movie, head and shoulder above the more famous, at the time, Virgilio Riento. Though still 6 years before becoming  (with Toto') the most important italian actor of the second half of the XX century, he already shows  some of  the peculiarities of his character and the absolute mastery of acting. The movie is also interesting as it shows how the americanization of the society through advertising tactics and commercial radio (but it was wishful thinking: I don't think there was any radio but the state owned at the time) were about to invade the country.

Captains Courageous (1937) Until the last 15' it was a 10/10 movie, but the weeping finale, only partially redeemed by the very last shot, makes it a 8/10. The action sequences shot in the studio with  back projections  blend perfectly with the ones shot on the ocean and the Bartholomew performance is impressive.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986) An updated version of the thirties serials, with yellow peril, supernatural beings, damsels in distress. A pinch of humor and somersaults kung fu (or Parolini?) style. Not funny enough, it gets boring after a while. 6-7/10

Follow That Dream (1961) One of the first lost chances of doing a good movie for Elvis. This one could have been a good time waster if only they had the courage to cut a half hour and give some meat to the dialogues. Sure, Presley playing the dumb smart country bumpkin, Li'l Abner-like  was not an impressive choice and he doesn't sound particularly at ease with the character, but some scenes (the bank "heist", the Wile E. Coyote gangster scenes, the trial and the psychologist "interview") could have made a good b comedy. Instead they are flat and overlong, with some rare flash of brilliancy. The songs, well, are not among the worst to be found in the Elvis movies but I never liked any of them. 5/10
