Director, Alfred L. Werker, Stars: John Payne, Ruth Roman, Ben Johnson, Ben Cooper, John Smith, Cain Mason, and J. Carrol Naish.

Ex-Confederate biblical sounding Outlaw Bedloe Mason (Naish) and his four sons (Johnson, Mason, Smith, Cooper) en route escaping from a recent bank robbery, ride into a small Western town to water their horses. Hearing a suspicious "click," Wes Mason (Smith) whirls and shoots a boy playing with a cap pistol. The Mason clan then flees but the youngest Mason, Gray Mason (Cooper), feeling remorse, decides to return to the town to find out about the boy against the clans wishes.

His brother Wes angered stabs Gray in the back at night as he is sneaking away and ties him to his horse, but he winds up at the home of John and Nora Willoughby who, unknown to him, are parents of the dead boy. Nora recognizes him as one of the Confederates but keeps quiet, wishing to avoid more violence. However, when John learns of Gray's true identity, he determines to avenge his son's death.

This is a very well made Western and at first it seems to be almost Disney like children's story, young Peter Willoughby (Bobby Clark) is celebrating his birthday he has a Union soldiers uniform on and some new cap pistols and while playing in the street he spies the ex-Confederates and creeps up behind them. When he clicks the hammer back jumpy Wes spins and shoots. And here is what sets this film ahead of the pack the boy goes flying back about 10 ft, pretty violent and to a kid, from then on I was hooked.  However its more of a drama than a shoot-em-up and it keeps you entertained never the less, Payne, Cooper, Roman, and Naish are good but Ben Johnson is a bit wasted in this. Caught it on TCM yesterday 7/10

I haven't seen this one, but Werker has released a bunch of unusual and pretty unknown B-Westerns in these years.

Check out The Last Posse
