What do you think is the deciding criteria as to when you should fan a gun or just pull the trigger during a shoot out?

Generally, fanning is only a good idea if you're a film character or a showman.

Fanning has no practical use whatsoever in real life.I have seen people nearly shoot their feet t off doing so.It is suited to the professinal performer and films...........It looks real cool but you will not find it of any practical use in a real gunfight .

In the movies it always seems like it's a speed thing, so in real life you can just pull the trigger faster?
