I've been watching a few of these lately and thought I'd see if you guys had any selections. Just to be clear I mean depictions of real crimes and criminals specifically, so no listing, say, Psycho because it was "inspired" by Ed Gein.

Al Capone (1959)
All the President's Men
The Assassination of Richard Nixon
The Baader-Meinhof Complex
Casino
Goodfellas
In Cold Blood
JFK
The Onion Field
10 Rillington Place
Z
Zodiac

Any others come to mind?

Carlos by Olivier Assayas.

But on the other hand I wouldn't label films about terrorists as crime films.

Actually, what isn't valid in reality can be just the thing for a film. A case in point, The Devil's Double, treats the Hussein family like they're a crime family, a conceit that works very well for the story it tells (about the guy who was forced to be Uday's double). In terms of the historical record, this does a disservice to Saddam and his victims, since what was perpetrated is of a much greater magnitude than what a mere criminal enterprise could pull off. But as I say, it works well to help tell a story from a limited perspective.

Henry Portrait of a Serial Killer. I take it over In Cold Blood, Onion Field and whatever.

Gomorrah is currently my fave true crime picture. I like The Robber quite a lot too.
