I love Hitchens on any number of levels. He's one of the few people I'd heard put forward an intelligent defense of the Iraq War, which I've always appreciated, and especially that he found a way to fit it into his broader leftism. His anti-religious writings were a bit extreme at times but the overall arguments are hard to dispute. Plus he was always an entertaining person to watch in an interview or debate, where he almost always demolished his opposite number with aplomb, wit and occasional vulgarity. He was (do I really have to use past tense?) my favorite contemporary writer and I have no problem going back to his books and essays regularly. I often hated what he had to say, but when we agreed I was proud to have someone like him on my side.

So yeah, I'll miss him. Really sad news to wake up to.
