IMDB.com has the French version of this film being 186 minutes!  Why is this? This cannot include the Grotto scene, since that never made the final cut.

Never trust IMDB.
Actually the French version is mostly given with 166 min.

But so far the 182 min of the Italian version (as quoted in many books) are also doubtful. Maybe with exit and intermission music.

The Italian version runs without the Grotto scene 175 min.
The MGM has wrongfully (imo) added the Grotto scene and runs for that 178 min.
