Yes by the second or third Dollars film he had some rudimentary English, I remember either an interview with Van Cleef or Eastwood where they say Leone had learned some rudimentary English, especially curse words first, lol, I distictly remember "sonofabitch" as being one.  Wink

Wallach claimed Leone knew some English by the time of GBU but he's the only one I've heard make that claim. According to Bogdanovich he could say "two big green eyes!" though. Shocked

according to Frayling (and every interview I've ever read/seen with the actors), Leone never learned to speak English very well. Sure, he eventually learned a little (so eg. on OUATIA, he knew more English than he did on FOD). But he never really spoke English well.

Frayling always talks about how Leone used to repeatedly use the phrase "watch me" to his actors, as he would show them how to act their roles, eg. "Watch me, Clint!" "Watch Me, Lee!" etc.

Groggy: Actually, what Leone learned to say was "two beeeeeeeeg green eyes!"  Wink

A while ago, Julie Cohen, the actress who played the Young Peggy on OUATIA, posted on this forum, and she wrote about Leone's English here http://www.fistful-of-leone.com/forums/index.php?topic=7468.msg114463#msg114463

I remembered that post cuz of that anecdote at the end RE: Sergio's instructions for her fornication; once you've read that, that is not something you forget  Grin

I wish that Julie and Scott Schutzman still posted here. They each posted like 10 times and then disappeared. Their contact info is available; maybe we should reach out to 'em and ask 'em back? It's really nice having people here who worked on Leone's films  Smiley

I chatted with Scott a few times via e-mail; he's pretty open to conversation though I didn't have anything profound to ask him.

The dialogue coach or director Julie Cohen was referring to was Brian Freilino, who was also heavily involved in the first english translation of the script.
