Also I see influences from  The Bridge on the River Kwai....ie blowing up the bridge and  prisoners of war from both films whistling in their marches.....

I agree, and am not surprised. Even more ironic is that this film was LONG LONG LONG LONG like the TGTBATU. Before the premiere, it ran for excess of 4 hours before being hacked down many times!
