I always wondered if Serio initially wanted Benny Hill to play the part of that nerdy hotel manager because they look quite alike.  Apparently Benny Hill was too busy doing Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines.

Benny Hill played on the PBS TV station (Public Broadcasting Station) back in the 70's-80's here in the US, along with other comedy classics and dramas, Monty Python, Fawlty Towers, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Red Drawf, The Fall & Rise of Reginald Perrin, Black Adder, etc., etc.
