When I was watching this as a kid...I always thought that this was the original soldier that got smoked.

Yes...thats the one.  I know the 2nd one looks more tanned, but so did Clint towards the end of the movie.

I always thought Shorty Larson was also Guy Calloway?
And to thow something else into the mix, I've always thought that Guy Calloway is played by 2 different actors. He looks like an entirely different person after Van Cleef shoots him in the shoulder.

Edit, it is the same actor that plays Larson and Calloway. Come to think about it, that probably isn't knew news is it;

That's another difference in spahettis - US films everybody has pefect teeth, maybe exception Alfonso Montoya in "Treasure of Sierra Madre.

Clint's front teeth were chipped then, Europenan actors just looked so much more realistic for the times.  I caught first 5 minutes of The Horse Soldiers last night, Wayne and Holden, had brand-new uniforms, Wayne had a rain slicker that loked new (don't even know if those existed then).  All perfectly shaved faces too, good thing in war that they had the time for that.

Back to the original question, I'm not sure whether it's the same actor.
I can see similarities in the shape of the lips and the shape of the mouth in general but the two scenes require such different acting and angles etc that it is hard to tell. If I had to bet my family jewels on it, I'd say no.

If you want to compare US westerns with SWs, you should only compare films which were made in the same years. The US westerns of the 2nd half of the 60s looked similar "atmospheric" than their Spaghetti counterparts.

And SW actors had also mostly perfect teeth, which makes a fine contrast to their very dirty clothes. Just take Tuco.

Groggy, are you sure? Just checked Waterloo on IMDB and in fact he is not listed, neither under credited nor uncredited actors for this movie. Moreover, under William Conroy on IMDB, you'll find a lot of movies (including of course GBU) he was in, but all uncredited. However, one thing is for sure: the union soldier (name unknown) and the dying soldier (William Conroy) are two different actors.
