The showing was preceded by a extremely short intro from Lee Van Cleef's grandson--turns out he's one of the ushers at the Film Forum. All he said was that DRAH was the film his grandfather most enjoyed making. He gave no further details.

Wow.

Hoberman may be an ass but he did write this interesting piece about Zapata Westerns:

I don't really have enough $$$ for the train. If I lived in the city there would be no question.

Yeah the train fares are pretty friggin' ridiculous; that's what happens when there's a government monopoly on transit  Angry

I also noticed that Film Forum is showing Citizen Kane and Vertigo later this month. I'm particularly interested in the latter, with the new Sight & Sound Poll. I'll be visiting the Film Forum for the first time tonight, to see GBU, so I'll be able to decide whether or not this theater makes it worthwhile to spend the $12.50 on movies that I could see at home for free.

I am also potentially interested in this 3-hour conversation with Billy Wilder http://www.filmforum.org/movies/more/billy_how_did_you_do_it showing at 1:00 PM on Sunday September 23rd. (I believe I have seen the shortened version). Wilder is one of my all-time favorite filmmakers -- and he was as great an interviewee as he was a director -- so I'm interested in seeing this. If anyone is interested in going to any of these screenings, lemme know  Afro

I've actually been looking for that movie for a while, (Netflix doesn't have it). I may attend a showing.

so I visited The Film Forum last night for the first time, to see GBU. (About 40 people were in attendance for the Sunday night showing).

RE: the theater: dj's description of the theater was correct: the seats are basically flat on the floor, no stadium seating; and the volume is rather low. Sit too close and you'd have to crane your neck to see the screen; sit too far back, and you can't hear much. I sat about 8 rows from the back, and it was decent enough. The sound is definitely low; I really like when a theater has a BOOMING sound system. But it is what it is and that's that. (A more eloquent sentence never hath been spoken).

Anyway, I enjoyed myself very much. The movie looked beautiful. Unfortunately, they used the Dolby 5.1 audio (is the English mono available in this John Jerk restored version?)

There was a decent crowd there (I'd say about 40-45 people), they seemed to enjoy it, there was one group of girls that kept giggling really loud at all the jokes (was pretty funny actually), I went over to the loudest giggler afterward and invited her to join the SLWB  Wink

I am sure glad I've discovered this theater, they have an awesome lineup of movies in the coming weeks and months. I've always been dreaming of finding a theater that shows classic movies on the big screen, and now I am glad I finally did. (Maybe one day I'll tell them to crank up the volume  Wink) But I do plan on becoming a frequent guest at The Film Forum. Only problem is that I don't have many friends who are really into classic movies (and I never go to movies alone). If anyone here ever wants to go, please post here (or shoot me a PM or whatever).
