A poster on IMDb mentioned that GUB was a great buddy film. I say reluctant buddy film. But no matter I posted that I couldn't really think of an earlier US film off hand, can anybody?.

Is GBU the first "buddy" film?

As I said on a previous thread that the big gundown reminds me a bit of "midnight run", the hunter getting all pally with his prey (well at the end anyway).

But you could say all the b/w double act films of the 30īs 40īs and 50īs these  could all be interpreted as buddy movies

You mean like Laurel & Hardy, Abbot & Costello, Martin & Lewis?

I'd say Vera Cruz qualifies.

The Defiant Ones may also count. I don't think dual protagonists was ever that rare of a trope.

I agree. If GBU is a buddy film, then FAFDM has to be one as well.

btw, I just saw Edge of the City (1957), with Sidney Poitier and John Cassavetes. A very good buddy film

Recently watched Texas (1941).

First half is definitely a buddy film, in the 2nd half the friendship between Holden and Ford gets a tragic turn.

FaFDM is not really a buddy film. I would call it a "companion film".

Yes, Texas is definitely a buddy film, as is The Defiant Ones. I really liked the former; as for the latter, I only saw the last hour of it (once they've escaped), but it was very good.

I'm not saying that FAFDM/GBU are buddy films. All I'm saying is that if GBU is a buddy film, FAFDM has to be one as well.

btw, I once watched Die Hard on AMC with those little notes, I recall one note saying that Bruce Willis said the movie can be considered a buddy movie, John MacLean and the black cop he is on the radio with  Wink
