Although this is not a favorite of mine, I decided to get the new CC blu and give it another spin. Still not a favorite, but you can see where a lot of contemporary TV has drawn its marching orders.

Anyway, I discovered that at the time of the film's release, Eddie Muller wrote a very good appreciation/ analysis of the movie. He makes some interesting observations about how the film plays off earlier works (especially Sunset Blvd.) before going into an in-depth explication of the film (so it is rife with spoilers). But Eddie is an insightful guy, so if you've never read his take on this film you should redress that situation now:
