"One banana, two banana, three banana, four...."

« : July 08, 2006, 08:19:39 AM »

Saw this yesterday and . . . wow! Easily the most interesting movie of the summer. Very funny. And unlike, say, Sin City, it actually refers to something outside movies and comics.

Not everybody will be down with the rotoscoping, and I sympathize (I also have my share of bad flashbacks from Heavy Metal, Ralph Baski's Lord of the Rings, etc.) but the technique does have the advantage of delivering actual performances by the underlying actors, rather than limiting them entirely to "vocal talents." Robert Downey Jr. is a scream, and his character wouldn't be half as nuanced if the actor's presence wasn't detectable beneath the "animation." (Woody Harrelson turns in another edgy-but-amusing performance also).

I'm not a big Philip K. Dick fan (I kinda like Ubik), and he has not been served well by cinema. Total Recall was a Total Failure, and the only part of Blade Runner I can stand anymore is the opening 30 minutes. But ASD is solid, probably because it has been adapted and updated (written for the screen and directed by Richard Linklater). Once again I note how important a good script is to a film's success.

BTW. this picture would make a good double-bill with Cronenberg's Naked Lunch; both films have in common drugs, paranoia, and insects. (Grandpa Chum, have I got your attention yet?)

In any event, this is going to make a fantastic DVD. And since Criterion already has a relationship with Linklater (they've put out deluxe editions of Slacker and Dazed and Confused), the image quality and extras on that future release are going to blow us all away. It's gonna be hard waiting for it though, I may have to revisit the film in the cinema in the meantime.......

you guessed correctly i can't wait to see this film... unfortunately I'm nowhere near a theatre that would carry a limited release so I have to wait another 3 weeks for the big release.

Yeah, the marketing has been really low key. That being said, at the the theater where I saw it (the Egyptian in Seattle) they had giveaway posters, buttons, and decals. (Is that the sound of gnashing teeth I hear coming from the east?)

Here's a good review:

One thing more can be said in the film's favor. It made me want to read the book, always the mark of a good adaptation. I'm going through the novel now, and am surprised at how faithful the film is to its source. Way to go, Linklater.

Just pulling your chain.  ;D Actually, a 4/5 is probably about right.

A Scanner Darkly (2006) - 5 or 6 out of 10

The unique look adds as much as it takes from the experience. I don't understand why they used it all the time and not only in special occasions; it kills the flow instead of amplifying it. Whenever a character delivers more than a single sentence, which is quite often actually, it just becomes hard to follow. I guess it has to be viewed more than once but I don't really care to do it. Also, the story seems blurred near the end.

If so, then your rating is high.

Well a fiver ain't really a ball. There's the possibility I might like it a bit better when I re-watch it, hence the doubt of a possible six. But that's not very likely to happen.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!  O0 O0

I really like the film and a lot of the animation. I also like the graphic novel derived from that animation: http://www.amazon.com/Scanner-Darkly-Graphic-Novel/dp/0375424024/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1416689083&sr=8-2&keywords=a+scanner+darkly+book
