I've just learned that B&N will be getting Guillermo del Toro's The Devil's Backbone next Tuesday, a week before its official release. That means it will qualify for the 50% Off sale. Just a heads up for y'all.

I'd forgotten about the Mabuse films. I haven't seen The Gambler, but I do like the second film a lot. (I haven't seen the last one either, but I take it that it isn't so great). Scarlet Street and Human Desire are both remakes, so everything in those having to do with plot must be credited to the original creators, not Lang. Except for Lee Marvin, nothing in The Big Heat does anything for me.

Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse (1932, 8/10) is indeed pretty good, and Die 1000 Augen des Dr. Mabuse (1961, 6/10) is indeed nothing special, but watchable.

Hasn't Lang mainly worked with other peoples screenplays and books? At least in Hollywood.

The Blu for that comes out after the sale. I've seen some things on other chat boards, though, suggesting the transfer is a bit dodgy.......

Yeah, best to stay with the DVD for now. Apparently, there is a nice restoration of the film under the horrible Blu-ray transfer. Maybe someone will get a chance to re-master it in the future. In the meantime, maybe we'll get a chance to see the restoration in cinemas.

So the French BD that was scheduled for this month has apparently been postponed due to quality concerns.

Yes, I heard this too. Apparently, Gaumont is going to re-master it again before releasing it. Meanwhile, Criterion remains mute.

apparently you disagree with your boyfriend Beaver. Beaver calls the BRD of The Earrings of Madame de... "a huge improvement over the SD transfer." http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDReviews25/madame_de....htm

You know what I think of the reliability of his screencaps, but as soon as I saw them, I immediately said to myself, based on these screencaps, how can he possibly think the BRD is clearly better? The BRD image definitely looks darker, (which Beaver does note). At the very least, I'd say it doesn't appear to me that the BRD is any advantage over the DVD. (btw, I am comparing the Criterion DVD vs. the Criterion BRD; I'm not paying any attention to the Region 2 version from Second Sight Films).

I saw the film a couple of days ago for the first time; I rented the Criterion dvd off Netflix. I think the image quality was real good.

Robert Harris included what appears to be a very level-headed review of this in his "A Few Words About..." column:

Well, I guess I've shot my wad for this go-around. Here's this month's haul (all BDs):

The Last Metro
Frances Ha
The Big City
8 1/2
The Uninvited
Tokyo Story
The Spy Who Came in From the Cold
Autumn Sonata
Cassavetes Box

Unhappily, the sale ends the day before Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion comes out. I don't want to wait until July for the next sale, so I guess I'll pay the $8 premium to have it at the beginning of December.

You can't pre-order from B&N and get the sale price? Why not try calling them and complaining. You are a member, I am sure. Tell them how often you buy brd's, that you buy tons of stuff by the sale, and this disc you are waiting for is coming out the next day, etc. Ask 'em to allow pre-orders with the sale. Wortha  shot; I'd bet there's a good chance they give it to you at a reduced price.

The Spy Who Came in From the Cold

My lovely wife bought this for me as a gift in the sale. I had never seen it before and was absolutely blown away.
