Kanal is very good, Man of Marble good, Man of Iron not so good. Ashes and Diamonds didn't meet my expectations and can't blame CJ for leaving halfway.

Just re-watched Man of Iron last night. For a film requiring a lot of audience-supplied context, the film works really well, even with the annoying folksongs. The scene where the alcoholic journalist shatters the vodka bottle on the bathroom floor, then mops up the liquor with a rag so he can squeeze it out into a cup for a few drops of the precious fluid--priceless. No, the film's not as good as Man of Marble, but not much worse.

On balance, Wajda was a so-so director. He tackled safe subjects and took few chances when filming. His lighting, at least in his color films, was always uninspired. That said, the one of his I'm longing to re-visit is the French-language The Possessed. It made an impression on me back in the 80s, but I've never had the chance to see it again.

That's what you get, Drink, for not appreciating the genius of When You Read This Letter.
