He made a handful of good songs: Life on Mars, Rebel Rebel, Under Pressure, Heroes, Jean Genie. I met him once in a disco over here, while he was trying  (vainly?) to pick up a blonde Polish girl. I thought it couldn't be him but rather an impersonator. Then the day after I read he was here to set up a series of gigs.

Saw him on the Station to Station tour when he came to Seattle. That was also the first time I saw Un Chien Andalou--Bowie used it as his opener. I'm still very fond of the Station to Station album, as well as the follow-up, Low.

He was also an actor, of course, but I can't claim to have seen much of his work. I vaguely remember him from a John Landis flick.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence?
No, but that is playing for free tonight at Lincoln Center. Also The Man Who Fell to Earth, also free.
