By blocking out Tom Hooper, Ben Affleck and Kathryn Bigelow from Best Director they've more or less rigged it for Lincoln to win everything. Not that I'll be too upset.

First, I will just list the movies I have seen in theaters in 2012 and 2013 (cuz I can only speak about those)

Alex Cross
Amour
Argo
Django Unchained
Hitchcock
Lawless
Life of Pi
Lincoln
The Master
October Baby
Skyfall

Several that I am probably forgetting,

and quite a few that were so bad, I left the theater after a few minutes, including A Secret Affair and Total Recall.

From this list, Argo was my favorite, followed by Life of Pi, which, I must add, I saw in 3D (This movie has been widely acclaimed for the best use of 3D ever, as we've discussed more extensively in the thread dedicated to why 3D will NEVER work  ;))

I haven't seen all the nominees, but as soon as I saw Lincoln,I said "Daniel Day-Lewis is a shoo-in for Best Actor, no matter what other performances there are."  Anyone agree?

Finally: how would y'all rate 2012 as a movie year?

I've seen four. But so it goes every year. Half of them haven't yet been released here yet, and one fourth of them never will be.

Yeah, that's obvious. Even though Joaquin Phoenix was beyond incredible.

2012 is one of the worst movie years in recent memory. Other than The Master, which is one of my new favorite films. And Moonrise Kingdom was pretty great. There's been good movies, but many of them forgettable.

Ted and 21 Jump Street were also two surprisingly hilarious comedies.

I'll see Les Miserables, Silver Linings Playbook and Zero Dark Thirty this weekend if all goes according to plan. No particular interest in the other three BP nominees. As a Persepolis fan I'm most interested in catching Chicken With Plums when it comes on DVD. I've no great interest in The Master after loathing There Will Be Blood.

I haven't seen too many 2012 releases so I don't feel I can adequately comment. Off-hand I remember catching The Hunger Games, The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Argo, Lincoln, Skyfall, Django Unchained. Lincoln is my favorite film of the past 5-10 years though, so I doubt anything unseen would top it.

!!!
What about the Hunger Games?

I didn't see most of the nominees in every category, so my 2 cents are probably worth less than 2 cents.

Lincoln will probably win more or less everything. At the very least, they'll get Best Actor. It's a role, a film, a director and an actor "designed" to get this Oscar.
I hope Hoffman will get his Oscar, and I'd like Prometheus to get the best visual effects. It had the best ones I had seen in a long time (and some of the worst ones too). anyway.

It certainly seems like they've loaded the dice for Lincoln to win. Which surprised me given that early buzz had Argo as the front-runner. Silver Linings is getting some attention but I doubt it's an Oscar-type of film.

Hunger Games was all right. I saw it twice and a rewatch didn't change my opinion. I look forward to seeing Ms. Lawrence again soon. :)

By all means. But after watching Les Mis be sure to read this: http://badassdigest.com/2013/01/09/film-crit-hulk-smash-hulk-vs.-tom-hooper-and-art-of-cinematic-affectation/

Well, I hate Hooper's directing style. I enjoyed John Adams and The King's Speech but the violent parade of egregious Dutch angles, low angle shots and awkwardly-framed close ups had me frothing with rage. Les Mis seems to offer more of the same, but with singing. Count me as having low expectations.

Does Lincoln say the reason for the war was to free the slaves or the actual reason of preserving the Union at all costs ?
Theres more truth in the one where he's killing vampires ! >:D

Why isn't the Master nominated for Best Cinematography? It's clearly above every film not shot by Spielberg or Malick we've seen for 20 years.
And I have nothing against the way Tarantino shoots, but at the best it's "charming", just like a Woody Allen film. Who in his right mind would give it Best Cinematography?
