ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST Is famous for its almost dialouge-less opening. What American movie of the late 1950's (a western) is equally famous for a nearly five minute opening, in which several of the main characters are brilliantly established without any  talking? Pint of Guinness for the first correct answer. Wink

High Noon, ain't it?

btw Belkin - paid careful attention to that pub while watching FOD, very cool!  Seems like a perfect place to toss back a pint or 12.

No, high noon has dialogue from quite early on. I watched it last night as it happens. Although interestingly Lee Van Cleef's character (Colby) never utters a word, although the other two members of Miller's gang who are on screen quite as often get quite a few lines. He's also the first character to appear on screen.

High Noon, fraid not, my friend. One clue, the movie I have in mind was made some years later, 1959, but good try.
TONER'S BAR (FOD) is a very cool pub. If you ever get there, the old barman is a grumpy throw-back but after you sink a few pints of THE GOLDEN NECTAR, he will appear almost friendly. Then is the time to ask him about SERGIO and COBURN taking over his bar.  Wink

It's not a western, but The Mechanic has an excellent opening with no dialogue.  I think the first word isn't spoken until 15 or 16 minutes into the movie.  And OUATITW's Charles Bronson is in it.

  Spooky.
