Agreed. This needs a restoration. If I recall correctly, Czar Eddie said it was getting the treatment, though I haven't heard anything lately.
This role seems like it was WRITTEN for Dan Duryea! Man, was there ever a better noir villain? It's gotta be every noir character's worst nightmare to have a knock at the door, open it, and standing there is Dan Duryea with that smile "Uh, pardon me... May I come in?"
Whad'ya mean "villain"? In the bizarro world of noir, Dapper Dan always plays the hero.
saw Too Late for Tears on TCM, Eddie Muller presented the Film Noir Foundation's restored version. Nice work, it looks pretty good.As Muller describes in this video (from Noir City Festival on Feb. 2, 2015) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2pko9PA0Mw the restoration is not perfect. Muller says in that vid that it would have cost $400,000 more to have all the stuff cleaned up. You definitely notice some imperfections here or there, but overall this is a damn fine job. If every "public domain movie thought to be lost" looked as good as this, I'd be mighty glad.
The restoration is out now. The price is bad though.https://www.amazon.com/Late-Tears-Newly-Restored-Blu-ray/dp/B01AXGCW9W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515517561&sr=8-1&keywords=too+late+for+tear
The UK blu-ray, which has the same restoration, is much cheaper...https://www.amazon.co.uk/Late-Tears-Dual-Format-Blu-ray/dp/B01CO3E9RA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1515519233&sr=8-1&keywords=too+late+for+tears+blu+rayAnd according to blu-ray.com it's region free. I can check later tonight if that's true, if anybody's interested.
Thank you so much for letting me know about the Arrow bluray. It's the same transfer, almost half the price and has a much better cover. There's also a region A compatible release for Woman on the Run. I'm going to buy both right now.
Just had a look, both discs even have the Flicker Alley logo and menu, heh... And yes, region free The new covers are really nice IMHO, but they also have the original posters on the reverse side. Great movies as well, both of them.
