Hi guys,

My name is Steve and I'm the Assistant Producer and Editor who worked on Black Hill, which is a short Western film myself and 2 other students (and a small crew) from Coventry University produced for our Final Major Project. It was shot on location in Almeria, Spain over the course of 5 long, hot, days - not too far from Fort Bravo!

The trailer and synopsis can be found here - https://vimeo.com/42552707

Also from that link, you can find information about purchasing a copy of the film.

Would be interested to hear some thoughts from such big Leone / Western film fans!

Great location, good production values, good looking cinematography, cool music, some good actors... great job!

---

The story is far too cliché, the editing is solid but drags a lot (we're on a Leone board, so, as you can expect, I'm all for a slow pacing. However, it has to be dictated by the film and not done for the sake of imitating Leone & SW), terrible sound design (at least get some decent gunshots, that's quite easy to do by mixing different "regular" gunshots).

All in all, it was a pleasure to watch, just keep working! That's a student film so it's more or less expected to be more about imitating what you like than creating something new. Just be careful with this next time because tributes and homages don't usually make "real movies". People will like it because it's "like something they like". Morever, as the creator of the film, you cannot make  the best decisions for your story, since you're mixed up about what you're really trying to do with the movie and WHY you did the movie in the first place. Instead of wondering "what's the best way to tell this story?" you tend to ask yourself "How can I end this with a duel à la Leone?".
I'm aware Black Hill has a real story, characters with arcs, and a point to make. I'm just saying: be careful with tributes, it's a trap (into which I often fall myself).
