For someone who positioned himself as Japan expert, his passing at 88 is amazingly appropriate (8 is a lucky number in Japan). I have certainly benefited from his insights, especially regarding film. I read from his book on Ozu almost weekly.

He had both perspicacity and a unique ability to communicate his knowledge to others. There is no one now who balances those two qualities so well. He is irreplaceable.

I read his book on japanese films written with Anderson, published in italian in the late 50's, if I remember well.   Honest job.
