I'm not very documented about TV shows, but here are some random thoughts:

- South Park being 62 is quite low
- Breaking Bad is better written than most of the top 10 as known by about 200% of the writers I met
- while Community is quite experimental hence not very popular, it's quite lame that so few professional writers voted for it. You may like or not the humor, but you cannot deny that it's one the best written shows ever (I'd rank it in the top 3 myself)

Oz being the last one on the list is quite baffling. Sure it's better than that.

Also the first three or four seasons of How I Met Your Mother would deserve a spot on the list, but since the later seasons have been utter crap I can understand its absence.

The only series in the top 10 that I've watched are The Sopranos, Mad Men and The Wire. Now I'm thinking I should give Seinfeld a try...

Mad men is the newest show in the top 10. It'll be interesting to see if it will maintain its critical acclaim the next five to ten years.

Have you watched Mad Men? I've only seen a few scenes here and there and it seemed lame and cliché to me. The credits sequence is a good example of what the show is: good concept, good aesthetic, but cheap and unfinished. Looks like a first draft. But people have told me that it just takes its time and slowly develops characters.

Mad Men is excellent. The best I have seen since Twin Peaks.

I needed half of the first season to get into it, but since the 2nd season it runs on a constantly high level of writing, acting and even directing.

Noodles, for me The Sopranos and Mad Men are better than Breaking Bad, which is pretty good too.

I'm in the middle of season five of Mad Men right now. I adore the show. In my book it's basically as good as writing gets. Almost as good as The Sopranos. But yeah, it takes some time to get a hold of the show. You should definitely give it another try.

I don't watch television since I don't know when, but I'm glad there have been so many shows around better than Batman, Addams Family, The Munsters, M Squad... I'm sure the fellas that compiled the list think that the Mash the series is better than the movie.

Stanton & MS: yeah I've heard that. I find it hard to believe but I heard enough about how great the writing is to give it a real try.

Titoli: Don't forget they only rate the writing here

Stanton: I've watched the 4 first episodes of The Sopranos a couple months ago and stopped there. I see how good it was when it came out, but I have the feeling recent shows like Breaking Bad are now using what was good in it (in short: freedom. Movie-like narrative freedom) and added more. So yes it's good but we have better things now (partly thanks to the sopranos).

On a separate note, has anybody here tried to watch The Newsroom, written by Aaron Sorkin? Anyone interested in writing should watch the pilot. It's one of the best pilots ever, although it drags a bit in the middle, but then hooks you again and for good. The following episodes slowly degrade by taking the few flaws of the pilot and building on it. But the pilot is really, really well written. Incredible Sorkinian dialogues/monologues.

I watched the first season recently. It's very uneven but great at its best.

You mean these people didn't judge by seeing the shows but by reading the scripts? In that case you are right.

I mean by watching the show and then NOT rating the actors, the camera work, the editing but ONLY rating the script, dialogues, story, just like you would do. And in this case I'm right too.

Most people who talk about the screenplay mean actually the plot and the dialogues of the released film or series. Not the actual screenplay as written down.

With The Sopranos it was also not love at first sight. The first brilliant episode was the ninth or tenth, and the 2nd and 3rd season are then the real deal.

Good to know! Can I jump to season 2 from S01E05 or should I sit through everything?
