This guy definitely needs a thread. He's the best French filmmaker since the Nouvelle Vague...but (unfortunately) isn't the best screenwriter. His upcoming film is getting quite exiting and may correct all the inherent flaws of his 3 latest ones:

The Sisters Brothers is an excellent book - between that and the cast, this movie has my name all over it.

I've only seen A Prophet and thought it was great. Where to next?

I haven't seen his early work (apart from some of the movies he wrote but didn't direct such as The Professional). From what I've seen:

Read My Lips (2001) 6/10
Effective thriller with a nice social atmosphere. Unfortunately, the social message is quite laughable.

The Beat That My Heart Skipped (2005) 8.5/10
His best one so far. See this one first. It doesn't quite achieve the technical brilliance of what came afterwards, but the story is perfect, the cast it top notch, the thematic is beautiful. It's a remake of FINGER (1978), that I haven't seen.

A Prophet (2009) 7.5/10
Technically perfect but I felt some lack of substance and authenticity behind the project... that was confirmed by what Audiard said in interviews (he was mainly concerned with crafting a film around/centered on an unknown and inexperienced actor rather than in the film itself).

Rust and Bone (2012) 7/10
Audiard's technical pinnacle so far, with some genuine emotion here and there. Cotillard is almost at her best, so there is at least one amazing performance. Unfortunately, the uninteresting main character, once again played by an unknown actor makes the whole thing kind of boring. But hey, who knows, you're a fan of The Wrestler. Also, the social analyse is outdated and laughable. Anyway, the film is an absolute must-see, just for the way Audiard makes us enter the story and the (pointless) character.

Dheepan (2015) 6/10
May be his most ambitious work. A fun mix of genres: an almost naturalistic social film that suddenly becomes a genre film. Too many flaws, including in the direction this time (some "well tried" extended shots). Many people misunderstood the ending, and the whole Death Wish turn was too much to swallow for the french intellectual critics: Audiard became the most hated french filmmaker when this one came out.

For the record, 7/10 is a good grade in my book.

I just saw "A Prophet" ... wow. That movie is as dirty and brutal as they get. I give it an 8/10

Are we really supposed to believe that the guy is rehabilitated at the end?

Huh? He's the new capo di tutti capi.

Huh? He's the new capo di tutti capi.

at the end, as he leaves the prison, his buddies come to pick him up in their fancy cars, but he ignores them and walks off with his (deceased) friend's wife and son to take the bus home with them, indicating that he is leaving his gangster buddies behind and moving on to a domestic life (maybe he'll even marry the girl and adopt the son).

To me that's an indication that we're supposed to believe he is leaving the criminality behind, though that totally doesn't fit with anything we've seen of the character.

No, they're his army, even if some part of him is still the young man that likes simple things. He's the new boss.

That's why he ignores them? Cuz as their new boss, he can treat them however he wants to?
