People have been misreading VANISHING POINT (1971) for years, mistaking its true author for director Richard C. Sarafian when they should be focusing on writer Guillermo Cabrera Infante. With a Latin at the wheel, the film works better as a Castaneda-esque Journey to Self, with the leadfooted Kowalski (Barry Newman) encountering a succession of spirit guides (one of them a naked chick who offers up a scrapbook of all his life's events) who urge him toward his destiny. (The elimination of Charlotte Rampling, as the comely shape of Death, from American prints goes a long way to clouding this revelation.) VANISHING POINT doesn't get the respect that TWO-LANE BLACKTOP (1971) does but it deserves a second look from those who assumed the forfeiture of verite was a shortcoming.
I came across this amazing paragraph today at http://arbogastonfilm.blogspot.com/2009/09/maple-glazed-arbo-minis-for-autumntide.htmlWTH? Is there an alt version of the film with Charlotte Rampling? If so, I've been watching something called Vanishing Point on TV and DVD over the years, and I've never actually seen the film!
