Many people consider he's not as good as he used to. My opinion is:

1. He's always been unequal (and people usually like one out of two films he does, we just differ on which one)
2. He's still the best, reinventing cinema every couple films
3. Most of his work that I rate as average (4 to 6/10) have great elements in it

Here is how I rate the films I have recently seen (more or less 1 point, depending of the day):

1973 : Mean Streets 8/10
1976 : Taxi Driver 9/10
1977 : New York, New York 5/10
1980 : Raging Bull 9/10
1983 : The King of Comedy 5.5/10
1985 : After Hours 7/10
1986 : The Color of Money 6/10
1988 : The Last Temptation of Christ 2/10 (as in "1 point for Harvey, 1 for Dafoe")
1990 : Goodfellas 9.5/10
1991 : Cape Fear 5/10
1995 : A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese through American Movies 8/10
1995 : Casino 10/10
1997 : Kundun 4/10
1999 : Bringing Out the Dead 8.5/10
2002 : Gangs of New York 5/10
2004 : The Aviator 7.5/10
2005 : No Direction Home : Bob Dylan 8/10
2006 : The Departed 9/10
2008 : Shine a Light 7/10, given the performance
2010 : Shutter Island 8/10
2011 : Boardwalk Empire - Season 1, episode 1 7/10
2011 : Hugo 3/10
2013 : The Wolf of Wall Street 8/10

I don't see any big trend apart from a mediocre performance in the 1980's: only one 8+ film between 1977 and 1989. And on a side note, apart from his pre Raging Bull work, I don't like when he goes too personal.

Needless to say, the only filmmakers I know that have an average rating close to that one (Leone, Fincher, Wright (fuck you, RR), Coen brothers, Malick...) achieve it with far far less movies.

Yes, Edgar Wright. I know I'm alone here to defend the guy who's beating the Coen bros to their own game. I'm not saying he's as good or as exciting as the other directors (actually, it's a lie: that's exactly what I'm saying), but in the end, his average is pretty high:

Shaun Of The Dead 7/10
Hot Fuzz 9/10
Scott Pilgrim 10/10
The World's End 8/10

Average: 8.5/10

RR: PowerRR

He directed it, and it has an impact on the way many other shows are done. I hesitated though.

In France, taxi drivers are one of these very regulated professions. We don't have that many regulated sectors (we're only half commies), but don't ask me how come taxi drivers are more regulated than bodyguards companies, I have no idea. Anyway, taxi drivers are protecting their jobs like anyone else; the strong regulation of their sector gives them some weapons.

They should pay 10.000 dollars to get a cool iPhone app and they would be ok for the next 10 years.

for some reason, taxis are a very regulated sector in lots of places. Even in New York, there is the abominable Taxi and Limousine Commission, which arbitrarily limits the number of taxi medallions, imposing an artificial scarcity on taxis and all the bad results you can expect (eg. taxi drivers fighting every attempt at reform, etc.) everyone should just be free to act as they please; if I wanna write "TAXI" on the side of my car and pick up passengers, no reason I should need gov't approval for that.............. it's a sad, sad state of affairs

which, btw, makes you wonder how Travis Bickle got his medallion (I knew there was some connection to Scorsese)

Not necessarily he's  got to have a medallion. He's driiving the taxi for somebody owning the medallion (the garage owner, which might be a cooperative of various medallion owners). Over here it happens quite the same: medallions can be bought from another medallions owner. And if the city administration ever tries to make the medallion free the current owners go on strike blocking the city's traffic.
Still the common opinion over here is that in NYC particularly and, generally, in USA, the taxi business is unregulated and anybody can have access to it. I'm amazed to know it isn't so.

Hot Fuzz (6/10) was not that funny, but ok to watch. But Scott Pilgrim (9/10) is a real beauty, but is a very different kind of movie than his other 3 films, isn't it? Actually I was totally surprised that it's the same director.

Somehow I haven't watched Shaun of the Dead yet.

Yes, I know Bickle doesnt have his own medallion ;-) .... That is the sad story. Due to the gov't-imposed scarcity (a limit of about 13,000 medallions in a city of 8 million people) medallions are now being sold for up to a MILLION DOLLARS. Nobody can afford it except big companies, who then rent it out to a poor driver for eg. a 12-hour period during which he has to hustle to make a few bucks profit above the exorbitant rental fee he paid... And now that medallion owners have paid so much for their precious medallions, of course they fight every attempt to expand access, (which would make their medallions less valuable)..... Whenever you have something, you make it more valuable by not allowing others to have the same thing..... Sadly, the taxi system in NYC is regulated more tightly than just about anythbing else. There is no freedom. And this results in a massive shortage. It is incredibly difficult to get a taxi during rush hour, and even not during rush hour. And there are set prices all taxis charge, specific rules for every single aspect of the business. No moral reason for it. Imagine any other business having the same rules. Like an arbitrary limit and set prices for owning a bakery? Or a supermarket? Or a fuurniture store? Or a barbershop? Totally insane... (but there are no limits on car services - which you have to call to schedule a pickup - they can only accept phone calls, it is illegal to flag them down on the street. This is so insane, I get high blood pressure just thinking about it....  Its not like that in every city. There are many cities which are normal - ie. in which basically anyone who wants to write TAXI on the side of  his car and pick up passengers can do so. .... As it should be in a free society.... Once you make a bad law, there are people who benefit from it at the expense of others and therefore fight to the death every attempt at reform; that is why bad laws are so hard to overturn .... Like those asshole Parisian cabbies mentioned in this article
