I read the novel a long time ago but didn't remember a thing. i presume it was because, if it is like the movie, this is heavy melodrama disguised as noir. of course, you have some noir elements. But the fact is that the story is lame and to be able to proceed you must have the usual moron kid and a father just as moron. Losey does what he can with the material and makes it worth a single watching. 6/10
