I am terribly sad to hear this  

Eli was one of those people I loved watching anytime, not just when he was performing. Even when he was giving an interview on TV, or accepting his well-deserved Honorary Academy Award, he was so funny to watch, I just loved the guy.
I guess it's the look and the accent and whatever else, but somehow, this Jewish kid from Brooklyn made a name playing Mexicans and Italians in the movies   But he could do much more than that. He was great, of course, as Mexican bandits in GBU and The Magnificent Seven, but I also loved him in The Lineup, Baby Doll, The Godfather Part III (just about the only good thing in that movie), and even in smaller roles, like his one scene in Mystic River; and even in a shitty movie like The Hunter (1980), I was able to enjoy his scenes cuz I just loved watching him.

98 years old. Married to the same woman for 66 years.

what a life!

Yes, heard this this morning in the UK on Radio 4. They played a couple of great clips from GB&U plus The Misfits and Baby Doll.

Sad to read about this on waking this morning, but as has been noted he had a long and successful life. I was lucky enough to see him in the flesh on the stage of the National Film Theatre (as it was still called then) talking about his work and his personal life, and while it would be unkind to call it a "performance", he did seem to be relaying a stream of well polished anecdotes. He was funny, nattily dressed, and looked about 20 years younger than his real age. His wife was in the audience too, no doubt smiling indulgently as he told such and such a story yet again, like how Marilyn Monroe would babysit their children for them.

"These days," he complained at one point, "I only get to play old Jews or Italians." I had the impression that it was the "old" part of his observation which was the main concern. Thank's to Leone for giving him the chance to play that memorable Mexican all those years ago.

Although he was best known for GBU, he always gave a great performance, whatever the film. I love the movie the lineup, of course baby doll and magnificent seven, misfits etc. Even a knock off spaghetti like aces high has some great wallach moments. Sad to hear but as others say he had a pretty full life, we all should be so lucky to make it to 98 with all our marbles intact like Eli. Rest in peace.

A golden-haired angel watches over him.

When I first saw GBU in 1968 that I knew who Eli Wallach was, as I had seen Magnificent Seven and How the West was Won.  To this day, I believe that his performance in GBU may be the absolute best acting display that I have ever seen, all the little "Tuco" mannerisms.

All his life, folks would call out "Tuco" when they saw Eli.  And he will live forever through that.

Tuco Pacifico Juan Maria Ramirez is now laid to rest at Sad Hill Cemetery.

 It would be fitting that Ecstacy of Gold be played at his funeral as Eli's life was surely a golden one.
