For me soundtrack music is utility music. It is made to serve the images. There are some great individual tracks sometimes, but soundtrack albums are mostly very repetitive. I never buy them.
You loss. Many soundtracks are just as you say--but not all. Check out the soundtracks for Vertigo or Norwegian Wood or To the Wonder.

There are always exceptions, but I'm satisfied mostly with hearing Scores as part of the film.
