Richard Attenboroug (A Bridge Too Far, Gandhi, Chaplin) directs this pretty uninspired movie about a ventriloquist who suffers from being a schizo and uses his dummy as a house for his second personality.

The only thing really original about the story is that you always know the dummy is not really alive, unlike countless of other killer dummy movies in which the dummy itself is evil. Here, we're treated to what is supposed to be a captivating character study of an insane man but you can't help but think of other movies/tv shows that deal with the same subject.

The high point of this are the performances.
Burgess Meredith and Anthony Hopkins being the high lights even with their phony accents (Meredith puts on this NYC jew accent that never seems to fit and Hopkins does a very odd accent that I can't place. Maybe he tried his damndest to put on an American accent but failed?).

Living dummies... heh heh heh.

I've actually heard a lot of good things about this film, but I haven't seen it. Interesting that you didn't like it.

I didn't dislike it but I didn't think it was any good either.
It's a very mediocre effort.
The problem with it is that the subject had been done many times before and most of the time better.

This could have easily worked as a half hour episode to InsertHorrorAnthologyShowHere and it might have been better. Stretching this subject out to feature length without giving us any new ground to cover was a waste of celluloid and talent.

Yeah this in the end turns out a weak attempt, despite the performances. The story's full of holes.

I'd buy that for a dollar. (the assessment)

It's another Ed Lauter picture, so it must be viewed for that reason alone.
