I think there's a good chance of him attending the event; it's on Sunday the 28th, and look at this Drink:

"While Morricone did not attend the Golden Globes, he is expected to make the trek to Los Angeles to be feted by the 11th Los Angeles-Italia Film Fashion and Art Festival, the annual pre-Oscars event comprising movies and music and celebrating showbiz ties between Italy and Hollywood, which will run Feb. 21-27 at the Hollywood and Highland Center. Plans are also underway for him to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on that occasion."

Ennio's statement:

“When Quentin first asked me to write the score for his new western, I said no. But Mr. Tarantino is an astute man, and he left the screenplay for my wife Maria to read. He had spotted who is the boss in our house. Maria realized instantly what a brilliant screenplay Quentin had written for The Hateful Eight, and she told me in no uncertain terms that I had to do it. I am so happy that I did. To work with such a brilliant young director at my age gives me great pleasure. He was just one year old when I wrote my first score for Sergio Leone for A Fistful of Dollars. It is also a deep honour and very humbling to receive this prestigious award nomination for doing the profession I love. I receive it on behalf of myself, Quentin Tarantino, The Weinstein Company, and the whole cast and crew of this remarkable film. And of course I receive it on behalf of my clever wife Maria.”

I've read on an italian newspaper that he won't be at Hollywood as he's convalescing from femur surgery.

A soundtrack enthusiast on the SWDB forum wrote this: "A lot of the score was used from the unused score to The Thing."

Morricone says one of the pieces of music is a unused one from The Thing.

Morricone wrote 50 minutes of the brand new, original material (it's all on the soundtrack CD); in the film there are also three "The thing" tracks not used in Carpenter's film and "Regan's theme" from Exorcist II.

Oops, then no star. One thing those Hollywood Star guys insist on is a personal appearance and ceremony (unless you're dead--but stars can only be awarded posthumously if the awardee has been gone for 5 years (I just looked this up)). You also have to come across with $30,000 dollars, which, I'm sure, the Weinstein organization has no problem with.

It's too bad, because there is a dearth of Walk-of-Fame Stars for practicing Italians. A few fence jumpers (Bertolucci, Anna Magnani) have 'em, very few others. I guess some kind of connection to Hollywood is required.

Why is there no star for Sergio Leone?

The Leone estate can't come up with it? Andrea Leone has been squeezing Drink and other suckers for years--hasn't he reached the 30,000 mark yet?

You have a point. Drink may have had 30.000 to spend if he hadn't bought every single DVD/CD/BD/LD/CDI/VHS/mug with "Leone" written on it. Some said he even bought all the documentaries about Sierra Leone "because if you're a Leone fan that's what you do".

Interview in the "Independent" posted few hours ago:

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/ennio-morricone-exclusive-interview-with-the-worlds-greatest-film-composer-a6869631.html

"But Maestro plans to be in LA himself for Oscars night" - sweet.
(about a month ago he told some italian journalists he won't be going)
