Sue Lyon died on December 26th aged 73. She was the beautiful blonde actress who played the title role in 'Lolita' (1962). She was also in 'The Night of the Iguana' (1964). She had a small part in Frank Sinatra's 'Tony Rome' (1967). She married a convict in 1973 and got into prison reform interests after that.

British actress Elizabeth Sellars died on December 30th aged 98. She played Humphrey Bogart's wife in 'The Barefoot Contessa' (1954). She was in many a British crime movie in the 1950s. I mention her great contribution to 'The Last Man To Hang' (1956) on my crime thread on here. Good actress.

Another cast member of Once Upon A Time In America passed away.  Actor Robert Harper who played Sharkey.  Noticed his name on a list.  Really wasn't much out there.  I think it was just made public yesterday.  He had other movies in his filmography (The Insider, The War Of The Roses, Deconstructing Harry)  but seemed to work more extensively in television throughout the years.

The other recent passing that caught my eye was screen writer Harriet Frank Jr.  She collaborated with her husband Irving Ravetch on over eight films for Martin Ritt including Hud, Hombre, Conrack and Norma Rae.  Other westerns to their credit The Spikes Gang and The Cowboys.  Also wrote the screenplay for The Reivers starring Steve McQueen.

If you weren't a Mazzy Star fan (I wasn't) his passing is still notable as he was the one who made Assayas's Clean credible. Only 61!

I would give Mazzy Star another shot, they're the only band that could sort of be described as doo wop psych - or maybe them and Cowboy Junkies. Silly label aside, their stuff is pretty timeless. Those first three albums are really damn good and Hope Sandoval's first solo album is great.

RIP. I've been through all/most of Robach's stuff, he's underrated.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

Clive Cussler died on February 24th aged 88. He was the famous writer of sea-faring adventures including 'Raise The Titanic.' I like him most for writing and hosting and narrating 'The Sea Hunters' TV series that ran from 2002 to 2006. Some really good mystery adventures among those episodes. I recommend sampling some of those if you haven't already seen them.

R. D. Call died on February 27th aged 70. He's been working up until late so a bit unexpected. Complications set in after back surgery. He played a mean baddie in so many movies and on TV.

He cropped up in a lot of murder mystery series like 'Nero Wolfe' and 'Diagnosis Murder' and 'Murder She Wrote.' So I got to know his face well. My favourite of his roles is as Captain Cody in a 2002 movie 'Murder By Numbers.' With his line "You're supposed to identify yourself with the murderer. Not the victim."
