The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

« #16 : February 28, 2008, 08:56:51 AM »

Just saw this, I'll give it 8/10. It's very violent but the violence isn't pointless.

This week I'm able to see movies I other wise couldn't because I'm visiting my sister in Helsinki 8) No Country for Old Men and Sweney Todd coming soon.

Not even sure if I'd say EASTERN PROMISES was a commercial movie. It definitely was very deep with a deliberate pace and the ending was anything but conventional or formula foregoing a typical Hollywood style ending.

I would say it was more commercial than his earlier stuff which appeals to a more pretentious audience.

 ;D

Maybe, I just happen to think it's not a movie for those who have to have things thrown at them every few minutes to sustain interest. It was a carefully plotted film with a slow build punctuated by occasional graphically violent scenes and the film was far from linear. IMO, it's not a mainstream flick in the traditional sense.

It was talked about on page one and spilled over onto page two. So how is it coming out of the blue? I just saw the movie recently. Was my response problematic for you or something?

Not at all, I just couldn't see how it related to any of the earlier posts. Forget I ever mentioned it :)

A Russian teenager living in London who dies during childbirth leaves clues to a midwife (Naomi Watts) in her journal that that could tie her child to a rape involving a violent Russian mob family.

David Cronenberg strikes gold yet again with this taut, crime thriller. An instant classic is how I would describe this gem.

I finally had the opportunity to view this authentic, highly realistic look into Russian-underground organized crime. This is one of the only few mafia-based films that has closely resembled that of THE GODFATHER TRIOLOGY.

This film requires a viewer with patience because of the intelligent and smart storyline that develops throughout the film. You cannot turn away for a second without being a bit confused in the process. I would recommend multiple viewings.

I have to mention the acting work here by Viggo Mortensen. This man amazes me more and more with each passing role. He can take on anything as far as I'm concerned. His Russian accent was spot on. I loved Mortensen's character so much, I hope they revist him again in a possible sequel and continue this crime story.

A few years from the release of Eastern Promises I think we can agree the huge hype about it was a little exaggerated. I liked the movie, it definitely has some strong points, but honestly there's little we haven't seen already in movies about the mafia and similar organized crime groups, the only difference is that here we can see Russians in the main role, rather than the usual Irishmen, Italians or Jews. There were some pretty explicit parts concerning killings and things like that, but again, we really saw all that before, and thus although certainly tragic I'd call them far from gruesome or unbearable. The actors did a solid job, I (surprisingly) liked Viggo. I'm no expert but I don't know about the character's accents everybody's praising, it seems to me the classic strong non-English foreigner accent, couldn't really tag it strictly as a Russian accent. That and a couple of other semi-ignorant flops that could have been easily corrected I simply could not understand, but unlike the meticulous me those things probably won't (or better - didn't) bother much the audience.

Good, not great.
