I was about to turn it off after 30', but the film starts gaining momentum after that and becomes a kind of DETeuroOUR. Only better. I don't know how much of a neo-noir it is, I leave to CJ to decide on the matter, but I think it is much more noir than most of the crap CJ ladles to this board, if being a kinda noir is an asset. Simenon wrote the novel in USA in the early '50's, so the credentials are the right ones. Carole Bouquet is certainly more attractive to me as a MILF than in the '70's as I always thought she was the least attractive of all the Bond girls of all times. So I can't understand how one can picture her married to a nobody like a miscast Darroussin. The OST tries to ape Herrmann or you name it: it doesn't make it. Anyway 7/10.

The movie follows quite closely the novel, but also varies from it regarding

SPOILER (fug the spoilers alert)

the murder of the escaped convict. It is clear that the movie cannot delve into the problems of the relationship between man and wife as the novel can  and to give more thrill to the movie it invents the whole story of the murder, while in the novel the problem is rather the effect of the rape. But I think that both approaches have validity.
