Ok while I was thinking about what it would take to resusitate the SW Genre, I re-read Howard Huges's the Pocket Essential "Spaghetti Western".

What the Spaghetti Westerns did well:

The Stranger in town Lone Hero
Untrustworth Alliances Gunslingers team up
The Revenge flick
The Mexican Revolution
The Comic/Parody

What subgenres they createdl:

The Gothic
The Circus

What they attempted:

The Mystic western

What subgenres they didn't attempt to my knowledge:

Cowboy vs Indians
Cavalry vs Indians
Settlers vs Indians
Cattlemen vs Settlers
