As this article reminds us, DVDs and DVD players entered the US market in March of 1997. It also helpfully mentions that the Japanese had the technology on the market in November of 1996. As a matter of fact, I was living in Japan at the time, and during Christmas break 96 I decided to update my LaserDisc player. Pioneer had an LD/DVD combo player (it also played CDs) and I decided to get one (I had a lot of LDs then). I made a special trip to Shinjuku in order to carry back a player to my apartment in Shonandai. My first DVD, purchased in December 1996, was Eraser.

No, I didn't keep many of my Region 2 DVDs when I moved back to the States.
