I dunno if there are a lot of Metallica-fans on this board.  Singer James Hetfield's favourite movie is GBU, and on (almost?) every concert they play the original 'the Ecstacy of Gold' before they come up.  Last year they did at a festival in Belgium.  This year I did not go, but when I saw the livestream on my computer, my heart broke.  Not only did they play the music, they played almost the whole scene on these big screens...  Pretty cool way to start a show, isn't it?

As far as I'm concerned the only connection between Metallica and Spaghetti Westerns is that Metallica deserve to be gunned down in a hideous bloody vengeance spree.

That's only a matter of taste, isn't it?  As far as I'm concerned, their music is better than a shitload (read: 99%) of contemporary music.  99% of what people call music is confused with 'musical travesties'.

It was more their reporting their own fans who downloaded their music that they deserve vengeance for.

There's a brilliant South Park episode which spoofs the anti-music downloading scares. This guy from the music industry is showing the boys round all these artists' mansions saying stuff like

"See that guy sobbing beside the luxury swimming pool there? That's Lars Ulrich. He planned to have a gold-plated cocktail bar fitted next to the pool, but now, thanks to illegal downloads, he's going to have to wait til next month!"

Has anyone seen the documentary about Metallica, "Some Kind of Monster"?  I haven't seen it but read the reviews, sounds very Spinal Tappish.  "It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever."

And what if your hand should shake a little?  And that Gringo so fast on the draw.

was this during the period in which the band went through some sort of gut-wrentching self analysis ?

Yes, it was, and there was a big crisis over James Hetfield suddenly wanting to work 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every day in the studio... like it was a normal "job" being in Metallica

if he'd never become a musician james may probably become a working class hero which explains the 9 to 4 deal. but their analisis saved them from breaking up.
downloading them was probably what pushed them over the edge. as nuts as these guys are capibable of getting they seem to  keep a "clean house" which may explain why the've managed to stay together and continue to create new music.

the basic chords of "extacy of gold" have a  metalish zep feel.  morricone wrote all the signiture peices in D_minor....the sadest of ALL keys.--nigel tufnel

 8)  I'm not a Metallica fan myself but I have a friend who is a huge fan (I got him the action figures box set by Mcfarlane Toys as an Xmas gift a few years ago)  and he told me about how the band play the Ecstasy of Gold theme before a gig. interesting. I often wonder if my favourite band are fans of Leone. the said band being U2.

I have seen the show last year in Arnhem, The Netherlands. Metallica is one of the greatest metall bands ever. The first four albums are a legend. If Metallica wasn't there, a lot of modern bands never excisted. Bands like, for example Nickelback.
In the early 90's they used a tune from Once Upon a Time in The West, the one from Jill.
