Just saw The Fugitive on TCM. (Note: It is available on watch TCM until Tuesday, May 23, 2017 http://www.tcm.com/watchtcm/movies/ . To watch movies on Watch TCM, you need to have an account with a participating cable provider).

This is a really crappy movie. Nice cinematography, but that's all. You can even consider this a near-noir.

5/10

This week is the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Midway https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.washingtonpost.com/amphtml/blogs/post-partisan/wp/2017/06/04/none-of-them-came-back-remembering-the-battle-of-midway-75-years-later/

Great time to watch John Ford's documentary THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=89gRI_ROTKQ

I've been searching for some time for Peter Bogdanovich's documentary "Directed by John Ford," and finally found it ... with Japanese subtitles for DJ  Wink https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PHzMAP9u9o It is the updated version - includes some of the footage Bogdanovich shot in the late 1960's (John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda, and Ford himself) and Orson Welles's narration, plus some more interviews in 2006, with Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, and Walter Hill

And here is another documentary about Ford called "The American West of John Ford," made during Ford's lifetime, also with interviews with Wayne, Fonda, Stewart, and Ford. One of the filmmakers on this documentary was Ford's grandson Dan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfBdQtQm_GQ

Thanks all for the documentary recommendations about Ford. I'm a big fan. Ford is probably the director whose stock has fallen further over the years than any other.

By the time the 60s and 70s came around, there were quite a lot of people who considered Ford old-fashioned, offering up slices of Americana that were overly nostalgic and sentimental about a West that very likely never was. I don't have a problem with Ford whatsoever, but I read quite a few reviews who considered Ford and his movies simple, probably also because none of his movies are in any way avangarde.

From what I've read, Ford was considered as way too popular ad not edgy enough by everybody until the 60's, when he was suddenly acclaimed by the intelligencia (starting from the Cahiers du Cinema crowd). Since then, he's always been highly honored in almost every publication on the topic. That being said, fewer and fewer regular film-goers watch his work.

We had a LIBERTY VALANCE 35mm screening here and it was nice to see some ticket-buyers below the age of 40...
I'm a big Fordian, yet my two favorites are not Westerns...

Ford is surely overrated.

His films are good of course (well not all), and he was a talented director, he had his themes, and his way to turn them into compelling movies, but all of his films have also terrible flaws, which people seem to ignore with courage. Because of these flaws none of his films is a 10 for me.

My theory is that people like films for certain qualities they find in them. Once they find enough qualities, they don't care for the movie's flaws. I don't know if it's a good or a bad thing, it just is the way it works, I guess.

For example, our Friend Mr Siegel here doesn't care about the flaws you're talking about. He doesn't even want to read about them since he loves Ford films way more than anything you can find against him.

So I'm guessing you're strongly disagreeing with Leone's hate for Grapes of Wrath?

I don't remember that... is it in Chris Frayling's book?

GRAPES OF WRATH is my favorite film made in the 30s Smiley.

Just bought me the German 1st release poster, I had to,
it pops up every decade or so... Smiley.

(Of course Ford made some stinkers as well, but so did everybody else who
made more then 15 or 20 films...)
