I make this distinction: Moore was good, but the pictures he was in sucked. I don't like any of the Bonds he made, but that wasn't due to any deficiency on his part. The writing on every Bond picture after OHMSS (but also YOLT) was bad and wasn't improved until the Craig films. I have liked all the actors who played Bond, but to my mind, the only Bond films worth revisiting are the first four with Connery, OHMSS, and the first two with Craig. Others disagree? WTHDIC???

That's what you get, Drink, for not appreciating the genius of When You Read This Letter.

Yes I do.
Actually I prefer meanwhile the best 2 Rogers to every one with Connery, while some of his others are amongst the weakest.

The best Bonds are:

Live and Let Die
Licence to Kill
Golden Eye
Casino Royale
and the one that tops all the others by far: Quantum of Solace

The first 2 with Connery are also ok

TSWLM is btw a surprisingly stylish film, while Moonraker, despite made by the same guys, is surprisingly un-stylish, and together with A view to a Kill the worst Bond. (Also boring are YOLT and Tomorrow Never Dies)

Moore, who was asked to play Bond already for Dr No, and I think also for OHMSS and maybe Diamonds are Forever, took over the role at a time when the films had already become very self parodistic, when it seemed that the action scenes were the most important things, and the stories were written around the action. While Connery felt already uncomfortable for that kind of movies in YOLT, Moore was perfect for that type of action film. Unfortunately the cheap humour, which was since 2nd Bond film a part of the series, got too much room in his films, so that they often feel more silly than they are.
Unfortunately some of his films were made with too much routine instead of ideas. But LALD and TSWLM are pretty good examples for the changed style of the series, a series which was from the beginning on closer to adventure films than to thrillers.
I like Octopussy to a certain extent, but just like For Your Eyes Only it lacks a good director, and some of the sillyness is too much. But TSWLM is the film in which the balance between humour, action and a much-bigger-than-life story works very well, and which defined the series for the next 3 decades.
