... based on this film alone, it seems David Mich˘d is a director who appreciates that a lean script with great visual style is what really matters.

I cannot believe how different "War Machine" was from what I had expected based on "The Rover". Regardless of the actual plot and acting (I'll let others comment on that), "War Machine" simply did not make use of the cinematic medium; it could just as well have been a stage play. The only consistency I can find between "The Rover" and "War Machine" is a desire to be different: "The Rover" did this visually by justifying its very existence as a movie when no other medium would have sufficed (unlike countless films); the "War Machine" did it through a very different plot which was then shot in a manner not justifying the medium (like countless films).

It's disappointing to hear that.

I saw it yesterday, and yes, yes, yes. Kind of boring made-for-TV stuff. I cannot believe they put 80 millions in this. There are a few moments that hint at what the film could have been, had Mich˘d (director and writer here) done his job and you know, had had a vision for the film, or something. He's a young director, he may not be used to work with a crew this size and maybe he struggled with that.

4/10.

Or maybe directors aren't actually . . . auteurs?  Shocked

Even the camerawork and editing lack vision.

Agreed - so weird it's the same guy.

The good ones are; the less good ones very occasionally are; the vast majority aren't.

TR is boring from what I remember having tried to watch it a few years back. Couldn't get past the first 30 mins. or so.

Though it does remind me of:

I've been a wild rover for many's the year,
I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer.
