Came across this "list" today  https://thetwingeeks.com/2018/12/01/the-ten-greatest-western-and-the-order-in-which-to-watch-them/?fbclid=IwAR2a5sSKIQj9gY_9riQXPbIvbmmkiVc1FDuPAbSXd_NC4tmAN2MbSGv2qDg

No Wild Bunch in those ten?   :'(

An odd selection amongst the usual suspects. If you want to show the genre's versatility you should not chose so many similarly films.

And then, amongst 5 more is Red Sun? Surely not one of the usual suspects, no wonder by such a mediocre film.

Not a terrible list. And the best thing about it is that it doesn't include The Wild Bunch in the top 10 ;)

I'd swap High Noon, The Searchers, and Unforgiven for FAFDM, My Darling Clementine, and Fort Apache. I wouldn't put 3:10 to Yuma or Red Sun in my top 15. I prefer The Far County and The Gunfighter.

This guy is trying to tell you the order in which to watch the movies -- then he should place Rio Bravo after High Noon, since the latter is (at least partially) a response to the former. Then again, he doesn't mention the political themes of High Noon in his description at all ...

Yes, he knows enough not to bore everyone.

But this list is just useless. We need someone to tell us which canonical films are canonical? The only reason to draw up such a list at this late date would be to fill it with surprises.

Epic fail.

The list is obviously not made for Western buffs. Itís made for people who may want to start getting into the genre.

Exactly, and that's why he should have tried to show the possibilities of the genre by a wider spectrum of films. And for that one Leone and one Hawks and one Ford is enough. And only one of the 50s "art westerns".

In another forum one wanted to make a month long series of video reviews/essays on the history of the western on film, and therefore prepared a list with 31 films open for discussion. his criteria for the list was;
" Iíve come up with a list of 31 titles to discuss, one for each day of the month. I would appreciate any input you all might have. It should be noted that Iíve selected films for their impact on the genre and on pop culture, as opposed to any artistic or technical merits (though many of these films are among the best the genre has to offer). My object here is to present viewers with a basic understanding of the genre and itís history, not to supply an exhaustive list of recommendations."

And by discussing his list I created a list with 52 films (one for every week :wink: ) following his criteria. And therefore this are not exactly my favourite films. Actually a few of them wouldnít make a Western top 200 of mine, but I like them all to a certain extent:.
