First noir? Probably, whatever that may mean. But it is a strange movie, quite uneven with a great performance by Lorre, one over the top by Cook and mediocre by the two leads. The nightmare sequence still holds good for the connection made with what was seen in the first part. Worth watching once. 6/10

It's considered that by most or at least a Proto Noir

Visually it's a stunning film and most certainly Noir. Made on a buck fifty budget, this is a lesson in Noir before it even existed. Unfortunately the rest of the movie doesn't measure up. The two leads, likable as they were, lacked screen presence and neither of them had a big career which isn't surprising.

I'd rewatch it, but only for the cinematography.

It's one of the first-ever noirs which I saw. I remember being a bit intimidated by Peter Lorre's facial expressions, etc. He was certainly unique and talented.

As already mentioned by others, this movie is mostly interesting on a visual level, the cinematography is stunning at times (by the great Nicholas Musuraca). I also consider it a proto-noir. Well worth watching for the visuals alone.
